Surgeon accused of causing man to die by mistakenly removing liver instead of spleen

USAToday reported that a surgeon in Florida is accused of causing a 70-year-old patient to die by mistakenly removing his liver instead of his spleen, which caused massive blood loss. The patients name is William Bryan. His family said he went to a doctor after experiencing severe abdominal pain and was diagnosed with bleeding of the spleen. He tragically died during surgery and the operative report said he died after his “large” spleen was removed. But after the surgery, a medical staffer realized that an organ that was labeled as a spleen was actually a liver. An autopsy showed that William still had a spleen attached to his body and his liver was gone. His spleen had a cyst on it that could have been treated. William’s widow, Beverly, said she is heartbroken and angry. She’s retained an attorney and they intend to file a lawsuit and stop the doctor, Dr. Shaknovsky, from practicing medicine.
