Vitali GossJankowski jailed after courtroom fight

CBS News said on Monday afternoon, that a federal judge ordered Vitali GossJankowski, the deaf man who was convicted in March of several charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, to be jailed while he waits for his sentencing date due to a series of threatening social media posts and texts.

Judge Paul Friedman scheduled the hearing after federal prosecutors reported multiple menacing texts and posts.

CBS News said when the judge told GossJankowski he would be going to jail, he reacted by standing up and fighting back against agents who tried to handcuff him and take him into custody. The altercation caused several tables to be toppled and agents from elsewhere in the courthouse had to run into the courtroom to help subdue GossJankowski.

So, GossJankowski, who was found not guilty on three out of his six charges related to the Jan 6. riot, and was allowed to remain free awaiting sentencing, is now behind bars and may be facing more dire consequences.

To review, in March of this year, GossJankowski was found guilty on three charges of obstructing officers during a civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, and disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building or Grounds. He was found not guilty of assaulting officers with a deadly weapon.

Now, after this incident, I checked court documents online. Federal prosecutors said GossJankowski, in this month of October, “has repeatedly used his social media to make intimidating statements regarding members of the FBI.”

Prosecutors showed screenshots of GossJankowski’s social media posts, which showed FBI police vehicles with an antisemitic caption that read, “Spotted them outside the Zionist FBI WFO. Most of them are murderous perverted sociopaths.”

Prosecutors also showed screenshots of GossJankowski directly texting a law enforcement officer and hurling several antisemitic and racist slurs at them. GossJankowski also said he wanted the law enforcement officer to be viciously raped. Prosecutors said the officer who received the texts is one of the ones who arranged his FBI interview and arrest in January 2021.

CBS News said the judge told GossJankowski that his social media posts were “extremely troubling and dangerous.” The judge said threatening posts are not protected by the First Amendment.

After the altercation, an attorney for GossJankowski told reporters, “The end of today’s hearing was a confusing and emotional moment for Mr. GossJankowski and not at all in line with the character he has demonstrated through his many months on release…”

CBS News said his sentencing date has not been set yet.
