It is November 1. Here are today’s top stories.
Colorado armed man kills himself instead of attacking
Police in Glenwood Springs, Colorado said a 20-year-old heavily armed man was found dead in a bathroom at an amusement park, explaining that he killed himself rather than carry out a mass shooting. There was a sentence written on a wall near the man’s body that said, “I am not a killer.”
The man’s name was Diego Barajas Medina. His body was discovered on Saturday morning before the park opened to the public. Police said he entered the park when it was closed and was carrying an AR-style rifle, a semi-automatic handgun and explosives. He was wearing body armor.
Medina’s brother told NBC News that he was a very quiet person who wouldn’t talk to his family. The brother said he was shocked and didn't understand what was going on in his brother’s mind.
Palestinian American mourns 42 relatives killed
In tragic news, a Palestinian American named Tariq Hamouda said they lost 42 of their relatives in a single day in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Everyone in this family picture was killed on October 19 when two explosions destroyed a neighborhood in Gaza City, including a compound where the family lived.
Hamouda lives in Minnesota. He said he and his wife, Manal, have been struggling to fully comprehend the news. The 42 family members’ ages ranged from a three-month-old infant to a 77-year-old person.
Hamouda said three of their family members were doctors. He said they do not have any Hamas members in their family.
Report: 3,500 children killed in Gaza
CBC News reported that according to a nonprofit called Save the Children, more children have been killed in Gaza over the last three weeks than in every other armed conflict annually since 2019.
The nonprofit said 3,457 children have been killed. This is according to government leaders in Gaza, who are controlled by Hamas. CBC said it is unable to independently verify the figures.

Cornell student charged for threatening Jewish students
NBC News said a 21-year-old Cornell University junior was charged Tuesday for making online threats to Jewish students at the Ivy League school. His name is Patrick Dai. He allegedly posted in an online discussion board that he would carry out a shooting and target Jewish persons. The FBI said he admitted to making the threats.
Dai is charged with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications. If he is convicted, he faces up to 5 years in prison.
A Jewish organization, the Anti-Defamation League, said there is a nearly 400% increase in reported incidents of antisemitic harassment, vandalism and assault in the U.S. since the Oct 7. Hamas terror attack in southern Israel.
FBI Director Wray said on Tuesday that antisemitic threats in the U.S. are reaching “historic levels.”
Border crossing between Egypt and Gaza opens
ABC News said the Rafah border between Gaza and Egypt opened today to allow some foreigners and injured Gaza residents to leave Gaza for the first time since the Israel-Hamas war began.
There is a deal mediated by Qatar between the U.S., Israel, Hamas, and Egypt to allow up to 500 foreign and dual nationals to evacuate per day.
Seventeen ambulances, each transporting one injured Gazan, have crossed the border into Egypt. More are waiting at the border, including American aid workers.
Egyptian leaders have been hesitant to allow Palestinians in Gaza to enter their country for several reasons. One is because it doesn’t want to be responsible for a massive refugee population. Another is out of concerns that Israel could conduct airstrikes on Egypt if Hamas fighters end up plotting attacks from Egypt.
Israel’s Iron Dome intercepts rockets from Gaza
NBC News reported that Israel’s Iron Dome intercepted multiple missile attacks from Gaza today. Images show a barrage of missiles in the sky and several explosions there where they were intercepted.
Israel’s military said its Iron Dome system has a 90% success rate in preventing rockets from hitting Israeli civilian infrastructure.
But on October 27, a rocket hit an apartment building in Tel Aviv, Israel. Four people were injured after taking shelter in a stairway after sirens sounded.
The Israeli military said if it didn’t have the Iron Dome system, Israeli casualties would have been far higher during the current war.
