Netanyahu rejects cease-fire

Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Monday that he will not agree to a cease-fire because it would strengthen Hamas. He said those who called for a cease-fire means they want Israel to surrender to Hamas and terrorism.

Hillary Clinton said in an interview last week that she is also opposed to a cease-fire. She said a halt in fighting would be a gift to Hamas because it would allow them to rebuild their armaments and find stronger positions to anticipate an Israeli attack.

The calls for a cease-fire are based on concern for civilians in Gaza. Leaders there said over 3,000 children have been killed by airstrikes.

As of this afternoon, news reports said Israeli ground troops and tanks are moving closer to Gaza City, the main city of Gaza. The Israeli military said they are conducting fierce battles against Hamas in Gaza.

There was an enormous explosion at a refugee camp in north Gaza that has caused many casualties. The Israeli military said it was targeting a Hamas leader and killed him and other Hamas fighters. The refugee camp is called Jabalya and it is the largest of Gaza’s eight refugee camps.

U.S. Secretary of State Blinken said in testimony today at the Capitol that they are trying to help about 400 Americans and their families leave Gaza, but it is difficult because Hamas is blocking their departure.

His testimony was interrupted several times by protesters in the gallery who demanded the U.S. stop supporting what they called a genocide of Gazans. There were people in the gallery that silently held up their hands, which were covered with red paint.

Acapulco death toll at 39 after hurricane

Mexican authorities said the death toll from Cat. 5 Hurricane Otis has reached at least 45 with 47 people missing.

News reports said residents are desperate for food, water and gas in the Acapulco area. There are over 1,600 people who are displaced and finding shelter in hotels, schools and sports complexes.

The New York Times said over 10,000 power poles were knocked down by the hurricane’s 165-mph winds. The Mexican government said it’s deployed about 18,000 members of its armed forces to the region to provide support and security. There is a problem with looting of stores.

Weather.com said the hurricane produced a possible wind gust of 200 mph, which would make it one of the strongest winds ever recorded on Earth.
