Update on U.S. Deaf/HoH Olympic athletes

In today’s Olympics event of men’s kayak double (K2) 500m, hard-of-hearing American kayaker Aaron Small and his partner Jonas Ecker finished with fast enough times from their heat and quarterfinal matches to advance into the semifinals.

I watched Small’s quarterfinal match. Small was in the rear position. When they started kayaking, their paddling motion was very fast and furious but they were in sync. Small and Ecker came in third place in their quarterfinal match with a time of 1:28.93.

The semifinals will be this Friday, August 9 at 5:10 am EST (U.S. time) or 11:10 am Paris time. If they advance, the finals/medal match will happen two hours after the semifinals on Friday.

Small and Ecker will compete individually in the men’s K-1 1,000M tomorrow morning (August 7) at 4:40 and 4:50 am EST or 10:40/10:50 am Paris time.

The other deaf/hard of hearing American athlete in the Olympics, as far as we know, is David Smith, who is on the U.S. men’s volleyball team. His jersey is #20. They defeated Brazil in a quarterfinal match yesterday and will play in a semifinal game tomorrow against Poland. The game is 10:00 am EST or 4:00 pm Paris time.
