Rep. Cori Bush loses reelection

Democratic Rep. Cori Bush just lost her primary in the St. Louis, Missouri area to Wesley Bell.

This particular story is getting a lot of attention because Bush is the second member of “the Squad,” a very left-leaning group of House lawmakers, to lose a primary this year. Bush has been a strong critic of Israel and accused Israeli officials of committing a genocide in Gaza. Bush’s opponent received about $8 million in backing linked to a pro-Israel political group, AIPAC.

The other member of “the Squad” that lost their primary is Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the New York City area during a June election. He was also outspoken against Israel and accused them of committing genocide. Bowman’s opponent, George Latimer, got about $17 million in funding from AIPAC-linked groups.

The Israel-Gaza war is obviously not the only issue that may have affected the Bowman/Bush primaries, but the millions of dollars involved and their defeats shows that it’s a very important and a sensitive topic for donors and voters.

ABC News said a large Ukrainian force launched a major attack in Russia by advancing into Russia’s Kursk region, at the border between Ukraine and Russian. Ukrainian forces may have captured several villages about 15 kilometers inside Russia. There is heavy fighting in the region with thousands of Russian civilians being evacuated. Russian President Putin is conducting meetings with his defense leadership on a potential response. ABC News said this appears to be Ukraine’s biggest and most serious incursion into Russia since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
