Trump wants tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China

Donald Trump said when he becomes president, he will issue orders to impose tariffs on 25 percent of goods coming in from Mexico and Canada and 10 percent on China.

Trump said he wants to stop an invasion of drugs and migrants into the U.S. and said the three countries aren’t doing enough to prevent it.

Experts said other countries could retaliate with tariffs on U.S. goods, which will hurt exporters. Tariffs on imports could also force businesses to raise costs, which may be passed on to consumers.

The Washington Post said it’s possible that Trump is using threats of tariffs to bring attention to the issue of drugs and migrants and explained that when he was president, he did bring up tariffs and dropped them after other countries made assurances they would do more to stop drugs and migrants from crossing borders.

Woman who fatally shot neighbor sentenced 25 years

In Florida, Susan Lorincz, who shot her neighbor through her front door during a dispute, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on her manslaughter conviction.

The neighbor who died was Ajike “AJ” Owens and she was a mother of four.

What happened? In June 2023, Lorincz yelled at Owens’ children because they were playing outside near her home and threw their roller skates.

Owens then went to Lorincz’s home and banged on her door. Lorincz said she was in fear for her life and shot at the door.

The judge in the case said Lorincz didn’t have to use her gun because she had already called 911, knew the police were on their way, and that Owens didn’t show an effort to break through the door.

Trump’s election interference case dismissed

Special counsel Jack Smith, who was leading a criminal investigation against Donald Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his classified documents case, asked a judge to drop the charges due to a Justice Department policy that discourages prosecution against a sitting president.

Trump won the election and is the president-elect.

Judge Tanya Chutkan officially dismissed the case and it is all but certain that his classified documents case will also be dismissed.

Trump posted on social media that the federal cases should have never been brought in the first place.

Walmart to backtrack on DEI programs

CNN reported that Walmart will end or reduce several of its DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) efforts after facing right-wing pressure. Walmart will end racial equity training programs for staff and its programs that were aimed at increasing supplier diversity.

Walmart is reviewing its funding of Pride and its LGBTQ-related products that are marketed towards children.

Walmart is the largest private employer in the U.S. More than half of its hourly employees and 42% of management are people of color.

CNN said Walmart joins multiple other companies in revising or pulling back on their DEI programs, support for Pride marches and LGBTQ events. DEI initiatives were a big thing during the Black Lives Matter movement, but things are changing.

CNN explained that in 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that colleges and universities can’t consider race as a factor in granting admission and conservative legal groups have filed lawsuits targeting companies’ DEI programs. With Donald Trump’s election victory, more companies are likely to turn away from DEI programs.
