A 24-year-old NHL goalie named Matiss Kivlenieks died from a freak accident when a fireworks mortar round hit him in the chest on Sunday night in Novi, Michigan. ESPN reported that Matiss was in a hot tub with several other people when the mortar tube tilted and started to fire towards them. He tried to escape, but the mortar exploded on or near his chest. It was previously thought that he died from falling and hitting his head on concrete, but an autopsy found that he had major damage to his heart and lungs from the force of the blast. Matiss was from Latvia and played for the Columbus Blue Jackets and its organization for four years.
He was honored during last night’s Game Four of the Stanley Game Finals between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens.
In Iceland, there were trials of a four-day work week involving over 2,500 workers from various workplaces such as preschools, offices, or hospitals to see what the impact would be. Workers had their 40-hour work weeks reduced to 35 or 36 hours. BBC News reported that it is considered an “overwhelming success.” Even though the hours were shorter, productivity remained the same or improved in the majority of workplaces. Workers reported that they felt less stressed, that their work-life balance improved, and that they were at less risk of burnout.

Two women were arrested for stealing a French bulldog puppy worth $10,000 from a Houston-area pet store on Monday. The pet store manager said the two women came in asking to see the puppy and then immediately took it and ran out of the door. Store employees called 911 and a short time later police saw two women trying to reattach a license plate they had taken off from their car when they stole the puppy. Police said the women were smart enough to take the license plate off but not smart enough to wait until they were further away before they put it back on. The puppy, which is 14 weeks old, is back in the store. The store manager said people do try to steal puppies from time to time.
In Austria, a 65-year-old man sat on his toilet on Monday morning and felt a nip in his genital area and when he looked down, he saw a 5-foot python. The python was an albino reticulated python and it is said to have escaped from the apartment next door. Police said it might have traveled through the drains. The neighbor was a 24-year-old man who had several reptile pets and may now face an investigation on causing bodily harm by negligence. The 65-year-old man is said to have only sustained minor injuries.
CNN reported that in the U.S., at least 233 people were fatally shot in more than 500 shootings across the country during the Fourth of July weekend. This number is very high, but it’s actually lower than the same weekend last year — in 2020, there were 314 fatal shootings. The data came from the Gun Violence Archive.
The gun violence statistics include the death of Gene Siller, a professional golfer who was killed on a golf course north of Atlanta. He was killed when he tried to check out why a white pickup truck was stopped on the 10th hole. There were two other bodies found in the truck, and the manhunt for the shooter is still going on.
