New Mexico politician arrested over shootings of rivals

In New Mexico, a Republican candidate who unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives was arrested and accused of paying four men to shoot at the homes of rival Democratic politicians in Albuquerque. His name is Solomon Peña.

Police said four local Democratic officials in Albuquerque had their homes targeted by gunfire in four separate incidents from December 4 to January 3. Those who were targeted were two county commissioners and two state legislators. Nobody was injured in the shootings.

Police said Peña paid the four men cash and sent text messages with addresses where he wanted them to shoot at the homes. Police said Peña even joined one of the men at one of the homes and attempted to shoot, but his handgun malfunctioned.

The Democratic politicians said they recall that Peña showed up at their homes in November after the election and provided them with documents that he believed showed election fraud.

Police said they expect to charge the four men for shooting at the homes.

Michigan mom and 2 kids found frozen to death

In tragic news from Michigan, police in Oakland County said a 35-year-old mother and her two sons, ages 9 and 3, were found frozen to death over the weekend in a wooded area after the mom experienced a mental health crisis. Police said the mother, Monica Cannady, “believed that someone was trying to kill her and that everyone was in on it.” Family members tried to help the mom before she left her home, but she refused their help.

There was a third child, a 10-year-old girl, who survived. Police said she explained that the mom took the family to a wooded area and told them to lie down and sleep. They may have been outside in the cold for at least three days in an area that was about a mile from their home. The 10-year-old girl managed to knock on a door and told the person inside that her “family was dead in a field.”

Police said they did get calls over the weekend about a woman and kids who weren’t dressed appropriately for the weather and that deputies did searches but couldn’t find anyone. The cause of their deaths is hypothermia. Police said this is an example of why there is a need for more funding to address mental health and for communities to help those who are suffering from mental illness.

Jeremy Renner home from hospital

Actor Jeremy Renner said he is now back home from the hospital after suffering serious injuries in a snowplow accident two weeks ago.

Renner was using his personal snowplow to clear a driveway near his home in Nevada. Police said when he got out of the plow to check on something, he noticed that it was moving by itself. Renner ran to get back into the plow and somehow slipped with the snowplow running over his body. His torso had extensive injuries and he had to go through two surgeries.

Renner said he is now home and despite his brain fog during recovery, he was able to watch a TV series that he is in, “Mayor of Kingstown.”
