Trump pauses some Mexico/Canada tariffs until April 2

President Trump’s tariffs keep on changing. CBS News said Trump, after a call with Mexican President Sheinbaum, announced he would pause the 25% tariffs on U.S. imports from Mexico that are covered under a 2020 trade agreement called the USMCA, which Trump himself negotiated during his first term. CBS said USMCA is in effect until April 2 and the 25% tariffs would take effect then. Most imports from Mexico are vegetables, fruit, beer, tequila, and other drinks and spirits and they’re covered under the USMCA.

More recently this afternoon, the Trump administration said imports from Canada that are under the USMCA would also be paused until April 2. A news report said 38% of imports from Canada are under USMCA.

CBS said there is confusion among businesses and consumers around which policies will actually take effect because of Trump’s flip-flopping on tariffs.

House censures Rep. Al Green

The House of Representatives voted 224-198 to censure Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) for disrupting President Trump’s address to Congress. Over 20 Democrats joined with Republicans to censure Green, which shows that a good number of Democrats didn’t like what he did.

The resolution to censure Green said his actions was a “breach of proper conduct.” After the vote, Green was ordered to stand in the well of the chamber as the censure was read out. Green and other Democrats who supported him stood together and sang, “We Shall Overcome.”

Axios explained that Green is the first member of Congress censured for heckling a presidential speech to Congress and that in 2009, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) was reprimanded for shouting, “You lie!” to the then-President Obama’s speech. A reprimand is less severe than a censure.

S.C. man scheduled to be executed by firing squad

A 67-year-old man on death row in South Carolina is scheduled to be executed on Friday evening by a firing squad. The last time this happened in America is in 2010.

The man’s name is Brad Sigmon and he admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend’s parents with a baseball bat. Sigmon chose the firing squad method because he felt it was a better option compared with the electric chair or a lethal injection.

AP explained that the method with the firing squad works by having the person be strapped into a chair and have a target placed over his heart. A hood will be placed over his head before three volunteers with rifles simultaneously fire bullets into his chest.

Russian missile strikes central Ukraine, killing 4

The New York Times reported that a Russian missile struck a hotel in central Ukraine before dawn today and killed at least four people and injured over 30 people. The city, Kryvyi Rih, is Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s hometown.

Zelenskyy said in a statement that just before the attack, there were volunteers from a humanitarian organization, citizens of Ukraine, the U.S., and the U.K., who checked into the hotel and that they survived because they managed to get down from their rooms in time after an air-raid alert sounded.

The attack happened during the U.S.’ pause in military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine and during President Trump’s attempts to get a peace deal with Russia and Ukraine.

The Times said over 90 civilians in Ukraine have been killed in the past several weeks from Russian bombardment.

Democratic mayors grilled over sanctuary policies

Four Democratic mayors of New York, Denver, Chicago, and Boston were called to testify before a House committee who asked them tough questions about their sanctuary policies on migrants. A sanctuary city is when a city’s leaders limits cooperation or does not work with federal immigration enforcement.

The mayors said they are trying to be compassionate and encourage trust and relationships between immigrant communities and local government.

House Republicans told the mayors they made their cities unsafe by allowing dangerous criminals to be released and that they are violating the Constitution and should be charged.

The Washington Post explained that the hearing was an opening salvo in a larger battle over whether President Trump can bend cities to his will on immigration enforcement as he seeks to carry out mass deportations.

Trump warns Hamas to release hostages

President Trump issued another warning to Hamas to immediately release all 25 living hostages and the bodies of 30 hostages or it would be “over” for them. Trump said if Hamas continued to hold hostages, they are “DEAD!”

Trump said he’s sending Israel everything they need to finish the job and that not a single member of Hamas would be safe if they didn’t do what he said.

Hamas said in a statement that “the language of threats does not intimidate us. It only complicates matters further.”

The New York Times explained that Israel and Hamas are at a deadlock over the second phase of the ceasefire.

AP said Israel is continuing to block aid from coming into Gaza to pressure Hamas to accept their modified ceasefire proposal which calls on for the release of half of remaining hostages but there’s no mention of releasing more Palestinian prisoners. Hamas wants to see a number of Palestinian prisoners be released and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

If you remember, Trump has suggested for Palestinians in Gaza to be moved out to other countries and for the area to be turned into a tourist destination.
