Americans borrowed $74B last year to cover health care costs
CBS News reported that health care in America is so expensive that last year, Americans borrowed a total of $74 billion to obtain medical care, including those who had health insurance. A survey found that many Americans feel very concerned that a major health event would lead to medical debt. CBS said health care bills have for years been a leading cause of personal bankruptcies.

Trump threatens sanctions on Russia
President Trump said he is strongly considering imposing financial sanctions on Russia because they are continuing to bomb Ukraine and not on a path towards peace. Trump implored Russia and Ukraine to get to the table right now to reach a ceasefire and peace deal before it is too late.
USAToday said Trump continued to play hardball with Ukraine today, saying he wouldn’t resume U.S. weapons and intelligence sharing with Ukraine until he was convinced that they want to settle the war.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said the task here is to force Russia to stop the war.

Kamala Harris to make decision on running for California governor
CBS News reported that Kamala Harris will decide whether she will run for governor of California in 2026 by the end of summer. Current California Gov. Gavin Newsom is on his last term and there will be an election to replace him next year. CBS said if Harris decides to run for California governor, it would likely mean she would not run for president in 2028.

SpaceX starship rocket explodes again
Last night SpaceX launched another test launch of its massive Starship rocket and it exploded with debris streaking in the night sky over Bahamas, just like what happened during their last launch in January. There were no astronauts onboard.
The debris field caused ground stops to be issued at four airports in Florida from Orlando to Miami.
SpaceX said it would investigate the incident in coordination with the FAA and take steps to make improvements on future Starship flight tests.
The mission had one successful aspect to it when the Super Heavy booster on the rocket was able to return to the launch tower and be caught by the tower’s giant robotic arms.

Trump administration pulls $400M from Columbia University
USAToday said the Trump administration is pulling about $400 million in federal funds from Columbia University and said it’s because the school has not done enough to protect Jewish students from being harassed. USAToday said Columbia has been at the center of college protests in which demonstrators demanded an end to U.S. support for Israel because of the humanitarian crisis in the Israel-Hamas war with allegations of antisemitism and Islamophobia in protests and counterprotests. President Trump said earlier this week he wants to stop funding for colleges and schools that allow “illegal protests.” Those who don’t agree with Trump’s viewpoint said there is nothing antisemitic about criticizing Israel over its actions in Gaza or expressing support for Palestinians.

Newsom says transgender athletes playing in women’s sports “deeply unfair”
California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said in an interview with Charlie Kirk that it is “deeply unfair” if transgender athletes play in women’s sports. His comments are getting a lot of attention because it is assumed that most Democrats have the opposite viewpoint. Newsom said Republicans have been able to use the issue of transgender athletes to win voters’ support. Newsom showed compassion for transgender people by saying they are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression, and that he has a hard time to see how other people talk down to them. Newsom said he’s able to both disagree on the issue of sports but have compassion at the same time.
