This is a big deal for Norway plus other European countries because this video has an all Deaf cast, Deaf crew, Deaf film makers, there were only three hearing people part of the process of the film and they are fluent in sign language. So, it is a big deal for the Deaf community there. The movie synopsis is about a group of childhood friends who know each other well, but after the pandemic they have been distant. So, one night over dinner they get together and things started to unravel. You can look at the link in this transcript for more information about the movie. If you want to watch that movie, you can contact them for how to do that. Now we will show you some clips from the red carpet event with the showing in a movie theater.
Michel Laubacher: Today was the first time I have seen the movie on big screen. I got goosebumps. Before this screening, we worked on this movie with a team to preview everything on a computer. We would need to squint in- feels like I have to use a magnifying glass. But today, wow! My eyes popped open with seeing the movie on a big screen. Everything is so detailed like the colors. As I was watching, I remember the times that our team worked together behind the screen. Now, I look at the screen and say “wow, we did it.”
Con Mehlum: I believe this film will give people something to think about, to make them more open minded. Don’t judge, but ask questions. Like if you notice someone looks different, go ahead and ask them instead of spreading rumors about them. It is important that we have an open dialogue and trust among our friends.
Michel: Seeing this movie made me so happy and has given me so much more motivation to encourage more people to see this movie. I do encourage you to see this movie because this movie has different topics that are important for us as a Deaf community and how we can keep an open mind. The more secrets there are or topics to avoid, or hidden information causes problems- it is always best to be direct and honest. There is nothing wrong with being direct. Seriously, the movie is amazing and Con here wrote this. It was a beautiful moment for me to experience his story come alive. I believe this movie can be featured in more places and I hope people want to see this!
Con: Motivation, indeed. Seeing this has made me want to write more and trust myself more. This film is also to inspire young Deaf people that they can also make a film too. Making a film does not have to be limited to the professionals only. Young Deaf people can do it too. That’s important.
Bülent Yalcin: I saw myself on screen tonight. Wow. You know I would see different movies with actors in it but now me seeing myself on screen- it hits differently. I see all of my facial expressions and everything. The message of the movie is very strong. It is an emotional roller coaster. After the movie tonight, I was dazed so I want to see the movie again tomorrow!
Camilla Rae Høiberg: I have watched a lot of movie and seen many different emotions. I never really thought to apply myself as an actress. Now, seeing myself on screen tonight, I cannot believe it’s me! I don’t normally act, but with practice, I was good! Wow. I am impressed. It is a great movie.
Iwona Cichosz-Yggeseth: I would hope that after people watch the movie, they are reminded to not quicjly judge people and their lives and make their own assumptions about them. We never know what is behind closed doors and what people are going through. The way people behave, react, etc. always have a reason. So, this movie gives this message to everyone that we are all humans, we have feelings, we make mistakes. When we mistakes, it is not like the goal of ours, but we are just humans.
Imran A. Khan: Me and another person named Ditte previewed the movie and gave them feedback before the showing. It’s a small role I had. I am really happy about this movie. It’s the first featured movie that includes about 95% Deaf people who work and who are part of this- I believe it’s the first in Europe. This movie is great for the Deaf community to encourage them that we can make a big movie like hearing people can. This movie includes a lot of Deaf culture and sign language too- I feel very connected.
André Røine: My name is André and I am from Norway. I made this movie poster. Why did I make this style? The team wanted to follow in the vibe of famous director in the 1960’s- Alfred Hitchcock. They wanted a design that had a metaphor and would make you think. Like here, there are small circular lines- that reflects that there is a secret, everyone has a secret. Now, every secret has a domino effect. It’s like waves. Now here with this box, it is like a table. The salt and pepper here are “stuck” on the table. So, what does that mean? Dark tales or light tales? That is up for your interpretation.
CJ Jones: American actor and producer: I cam here to watch this movie “Salt and Pepper.” Wow, it is worth my time to fly all the way over here. I think the movie is fantastic. It’s also something I am looking for to be featured at the SignLight International Film Festival. I would love to see more growth in Deaf producing films whether it is small or big as long as they make something, produce something, and create something. Collaboration with filmmakers is important, and we need to share our creativity with each other. Through this way, we will be able to grow, improve, and network.
Now, I would like to announce to you both that this movie here- I want it to be featured in our SignLight International Film Festival!
Con & Michel: For real? You want that? Wow!
CJ: Yes, want awards? More visibility? Yes! And I will invite Hollywood producers to come watch this film too.
