November 28 top stories

It is November 28. Here are today’s top stories.

41 workers rescued from collapsed tunnel

In India, 41 workers who were trapped in an underground tunnel that collapsed were rescued after 17 days.

CNN explained that the men were trapped since November 12 when the part of the tunnel they were constructing in India’s northern Uttarakhand state collapsed. Their only exit was blocked by about 200 feet of broken rock, concrete and twisted metal.

Rescue teams used a powerful drill, heavy machinery, and physical labor to finally get through the earth to where the workers were. A large pipe was installed and the men were brought to the surface.

All the workers appear to be healthy and each will get checks of 100,000 rupees or about $1,200 USD.

The tunnel was being constructed to build a road to connect two towns in a mountainous region.

5th day of pause in Israel-Hamas fighting

Today is the fifth day of the Israel-Hamas truce. Hamas has released 69 hostages seized from southern Israel on October 7 and Israel has released 150 Palestinians who were detained in Israeli prisons. News reports said more hostages and detainees are expected to be released. Israel has told Hamas that they must release 10 hostages if they want another day of a truce.

Two of the Israeli hostages freed are teenagers Noam Or and Alma Or. They were separated from their mother on October 7 and they had hoped that she was still alive, but they found out she was murdered by Hamas.

Another hostage released is an 85-year-old woman Yafa Adar, who was seen being taken by Hamas fighters on a golf cart on October 7.

CNN explained that about two-thirds of the Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli jails were held under administrative detention, meaning they were not told the charges against them or given due legal process. About 80% of them are teenage boys. CNN said at the start of October, more than 1,200 Palestinians were being held in administrative detention and that human rights groups have criticized Israel for this practice.

Israel believes that there are about 170 hostages still remaining in Gaza. Two of them are American women.

About 200 aid trucks have arrived in northern Gaza carrying food, water, baby formula and blankets.

Israel’s military said it is prepared to resume the fighting in Gaza after the truce ends.
