Second assassination attempt on Trump

The FBI said a man apparently tried to shoot and kill former President Donald Trump while he was playing golf in southern Florida on Sunday afternoon. Secret Service agents spotted a man in shrubbery sticking a barrel of a rifle through a fence. The agents shot the gunman and he fled and drove off in a car, but he was later arrested. The suspects name is Ryan Routh (58).

This happened at the Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, which is not far from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. USAToday said Trump had an elevated Secret Service presence after his first assassination attempt two months ago in Pennsylvania and it may have saved his life.

Trump said in an email sent out by his campaign that “my resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life! I will never slow down! I will never give up. I will never surrender!”

The suspect, Routh, had an AK-47 rifle. A Florida official said he may have been motivated by his strong support for Ukraine and the war in Russia. He made many political posts.

President Joe Biden said he is relieved that Trump is unharmed and that there is an active investigation. Biden said he will make sure that the Secret Service has all it needs to ensure Trump’s safety because there is no place for political violence.

Boar’s Head to close Virginia plant

Boar’s Head, the deli meat maker, said it would close its plant in Virginia that is linked to a deadly listeria outbreak that has killed nine people. Boar’s Head also said it would no longer make liverwurst. CNN explained that an investigation found that the company’s liverwurst production process was the root cause of the listeria contamination. Investigators said there were inadequate controls and sanitation that allowed equipment and employees to move throughout the facility, potential spreading bacteria. Boar’s Head said it is a “dark moment” in their company’s history and would make changes for the future, including implementing a companywide food safety program and bringing in food safety experts.

Biden targets Shein and Temu with new trade rules

CNBC reported that the Biden administration has proposed a new trade rule that targets Chinese-linked online retail giants like Shein and Temu. The proposal would prohibit these companies from using a special exemption to avoid U.S.-China tariffs. The exemption is called “de minimis” and it allows packages with a value of less than $800 to easily enter the U.S. without import duties and processing fees. The Biden administration said international companies, especially those in China, are overusing and abusing the de minimis law by shipping directly from factories to American customers. CNBC said because companies like Shein and Temu ship directly to American customers, they don’t have to pay tens of millions of dollars in import duties that they would have to pay if they shipped their products to U.S.-based warehouses for distribution. CNBC also explained that U.S. lawmakers expressed concern that Shein and Temu could import products made with slave labor without detection because they are not subject to the same level of scrutiny and testing that other international companies have to follow. Both Shein and Temu deny that their products come from forced or child labor. The companies said they will review the new Biden administration rule proposals and want to continue to do business with Americans.
