FDA approves Apple AirPods 2 to be used as hearing aids
Transcript: CBS News said the FDA has approved for Apple AirPods Pro 2 to be used as hearing aids. The devices can function as hearing aids when paired with an iOS 18-compatible iPhone or iPad and it is powere by a piece of software called Hearing Aid Feature (HAF). The technology should be available this October. The technology is for those who have mild to moderate hearing loss, which as far as I understand, is similar to over-the-counter hearing aids. These types of hearing aids are typically not suited for those with severe hearing loss, the types that we typically see in the Deaf community. But maybe the AirPods will work for some deaf people who have a higher degree of residual hearing. Every ear is different. This is interesting — the Apple app will offer a hearing test and the results will be used to customize the volume, tone and balance settings for the hearing aid. The AirPods Pro 2 cost $249. It is cheaper than OTC hearing aids but a drawback is a shorter battery life. I’ve provided two links for more information.
