Storms & tornadoes kill 7 in South

At least six people in Alabama and a child in Georgia were killed after a large storm system that spawned tornadoes moved across the South.

The six fatalities in Alabama happened in Autauga County, which is about 40 miles away from Selma. A tornado moved 20 miles through two communities, damaging at least 40 homes.

Selma itself suffered damage by a tornado that went through the downtown area. Several people were seriously injured. Pictures on social media show streets full of downed trees, power lines, and overturned cars.

In Georgia, a 6-year-old girl was killed when a tree fell on the vehicle she was riding in. This happened in the city of Jackson.

The National Weather Service reported 33 separate tornadoes nationwide as of Thursday evening.

Teacher dies after being tased

A D.C. charter school teacher named Keenan Anderson died after he was arrested and tased by Los Angeles police during the winter break. He was a 10th-grade English teacher and was 31. He was visiting his family.

A school official said Anderson “suffered cardiac arrest after being forcibly restrained and repeatedly tased by police following a traffic accident.”

The LAPD released several videos of the arrest. It shows that Anderson was very nervous after a car crash. He said he was driving a BMW and that he felt others were trying to kill him.

A LAPD officer on a motorcycle told him to sit at a street corner. Anderson did stop briefly but then jogged across a street. Multiple LAPD officers swarmed on him. Anderson seemed very scared and said, “They’re trying to George Floyd me.” An officer discharged a taser on his body as his legs were tied up. After a while, Anderson did not seem to be moving much. He was taken to a hospital but died. Police said preliminary blood tests showed that he had cocaine and marijuana in his system.

Anderson was the cousin of the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, Patrisse Cullors. Cullors said, “Keenan deserves to be alive right now, his child deserves to be raised by his father.”

LA Mayor Karen Bass said she has “grave concerns about the deeply disturbing tapes that were released…” She said the investigations would be transparent. She said she believed that Anderson was experiencing a mental health crisis and that a law enforcement officer shouldn’t have been the first responder.

War in Ukraine: Russia claims control of Soledar

BBC News said Russia’s military has claimed that it has captured the eastern Ukrainian city of Soledar, which is a salt-mine town. But Ukrainian officials said Russia is giving out misinformation because there is still an ongoing fight.

BBC said the town is relatively small but is considered important to Russia because they want to use Soledar to push on to the nearby city of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said Soledar is completely destroyed with barely any walls there still standing.

Trump Organization receives fines for fraud

Axios reported that the Trump Organization received the maximum fine under New York law after it was convicted last month of running a 15-year tax fraud scheme. The fine is $1.6 million. A New York judge ordered the fine.

The Trump Organization said it did nothing wrong and would appeal. Donald Trump and his family did not face charges.

It is yet another criminal trouble related to the Trump Organization this week — as its former CFO was sentenced this week to five months in jail for his role in the scheme.

That is all the top stories for this week. Have a good weekend and stay with the light.
