Driver arrested over crash that killed Deaf professor
The first is a report from NBC 6 Miami that a tow truck driver was arrested in connection to the fiery crash that killed a beloved Deaf college professor, José Granda last month.
The tow driver’s name is Jose Garcia. An arrest report states that the tow truck’s data shows it was going 81 mph about three seconds before crashing into Granda’s Honda CR-V. The posted speed limit on the Miami-area street was 35 mph. Granda’s CR-V was fully engulfed in flames and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers said Garcia refused to give a breath sample and was taken into custody. Police then got a warrant for a blood draw. Garcia was charged with vehicular homicide. Police said because of his very high rate of speed, “he demonstrated a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others…” Police said there was no evidence of braking on the roadway prior to impact.
Garcia turned himself in on Tuesday to face his charge and was released on a $7,500 bond. His attorney said the blood draw, which was taken 4.5 hours after the crash, showed zero for drugs and alcohol. The attorney said he believed the state would drop the charges.
Granda was a beloved person in the Deaf gay community and the Deaf Latino community. He was 69. I will keep you updated on his case.

Upcoming film “Boy Kills World” may be offensive to deaf people
The second Deaf News brief is about an upcoming movie that may be offensive to deaf people. It is called “Boy Kills World” and stars Bill Skarsgård. On IMDB, the plot reads as, “A dystopian fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.”
Filming took place last year. There is an image on Reddit that shows an image of Bill Skarsgård and actress Jessica Roth in their roles.
This film may be offensive for two reasons: Skarsgård is hearing and it appears that he will portray a deaf person. The second reason is the term, “deaf-mute.”
The film’s producers are Sam Raimi and Roy Lee. I don’t know when this film will be released. I’ll try to find more information and follow up on the problematic aspects of the film.
