Deaf man suffers random attack on United flight

I saw several news reports that a deaf man who was a passenger on a United flight was beaten in a random attack by another passenger.

The FBI and FAA are investigating. The suspect was arrested.

The deaf man’s identity was not disclosed in news reports.

The United flight was from San Francisco to Washington Dulles on Monday. The deaf man was sleeping on seat 12F.

The suspect is a 44-year-old man named Everett Chad Nelson (presumably hearing). He went to use the restroom and as he was walking back down the aisle, he approached the deaf man and suddenly attacked him.

A witness who was seated behind the deaf man said the attack was severe and caused the deaf man to bleed from his face. A good samaritan helped to intervene by pulling the suspect off.

A hearing witness said there was a doctor that happened to be onboard that came to help the deaf man. He talked with crew members through typing on his phone and said, “I’m so scared.”

The suspect claimed the deaf man attacked him in the street earlier, but the deaf man said he had never seen the suspect before in his life.

United crew members moved the suspect, Nelson, to a front seat and had someone watch him until the plane landed.

United said in a statement that when the flight landed in Dulles, it was met by local law enforcement and paramedics.

Nelson was charged with one count of assault by beating, striking and wounding in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States and faces up to a year in prison if convicted.

That’s the recap of the news reports and it must have been a terrifying experience for the deaf man, to be randomly attacked while sleeping on a plane. My heart goes out to him.
