AZ Senate approves 4-yr extension for ASDB; Justina Miles on cover of British Vogue
Arizona Senate approves 4-yr extension for ASDB
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
The first is a report from the AZ Mirror that the Arizona Senate approved a bill that would extend the existence of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind for the next four years. ASDB’s current funding expires on July 1. The school typically gets 8-year funding extensions but certain Republican leaders in the Senate had different ideas, such as making the school open to all students with disabilities or cutting short the extension to only one or two years. Many in the ASDB community spoke out and Democratic leaders in the Senate fought back. There was fear that ASDB would cease to exist. But now a four-year extension has passed out of the Senate. The Arizona House, in January and February, approved an 8-year extension, so the four-year extension should be approved.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:
Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

Justina Miles on cover of British Vogue
The second news brief is about Justina Miles, who signed the Super Bowl halftime show and went viral. She is on the cover of the May 2023 issue of the British Vogue magazine. She is seen sitting on a chair, looking like a supermodel, wearing a red and white dress. The cover has a headline that reads, “Justina Miles, Reframing Fashion, Dynamic, Daring and Disabled.”
Miles wrote an article for the magazine to describe her experience of performing at the Super Bowl. She said she is partially Deaf but she has always loved music. She said after the halftime performance, she saw her phone blow up and she got messages from Lil’Kim and Rihanna herself. Miles said she is currently studying to be a travel registered nurse and has a dream of starting her own nursing practice at Gallaudet University so that there can be more Deaf nurses.
That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
