95th Oscars: Troy Kotsur to present; ASL livestream provided
The 95th Oscars will take place this Sunday and Deaf Oscar winner Troy Kotsur will be one of the presenters. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar last year for his role as a father and fisherman in “CODA,” and winners are usually honored by being invited as presenters for the next Oscars. Kotsur has been traveling to several awards shows and giving presentations in recent weeks.
“CODA” also won the Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars last year, so we should expect to see some of the “CODA” stars there. “The Hollywood Reporter” reported that the Oscars will provide ASL interpreters on its red carpet for those who are working and walking on the carpet.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:
Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

The Oscars tweeted that it would provide an ASL livestream on its YouTube channel that will feature Deaf Interpreters. An Oscars official told “The Hollywood Reporter” that they have worked on the livestream to address delays by adding a “pause tool.” Last year the livestream went down for a time, so hopefully this year it will be a smooth experience for viewers.
The link to the ASL livestream link is in the description and the transcript. Right now, on the YouTube video, there is a screen that says, “OSCARS 95 ASL LIVESTREAM” with a notification saying it will go live on March 12 at 8:00 pm. The interpreting team consists of Topher González Ávila, April Jackson-Woodard, Jordan Lopez, and Jonathan Webb who are working on behalf of LaVant Consulting, Inc.
The Oscars’ main broadcast will be on ABC and you could have a laptop or tablet at the ready for the livestream.
