It is Friday, March 10. Here are today’s top stories.

Daylight savings time

Daylight savings time starts this Sunday at 2 a.m. local time. You can set your clocks ahead one hour before bedtime on Saturday. You will lose one hour of sleep but have more light in the evening. It’s almost spring — the official first day of spring is on March 10.

Gunman kills 6 at Jehovah’s Witnesses hall

Today in Hamburg, Germany, a gunman opened fire at a Jehovah’s Witness hall and killed six people before killing himself. The gunman used to be a member of that congregation and had recently made angry statements about the group.

Eight people were injured. Tragically, one of those who died was an unborn baby, the mother survived.

AP News said all of those who died were German citizens. Some of the injured were from other countries.

AP said the gunman’s name is Philipp F. and that he was a legal owner of a handgun. He fired over 100 shots during the attack. Police said they did visit the man’s home in January after they got a tip that he was angry towards religious believers but that he was cooperative and they didn’t find any reason to take away his weapon.

A Jehovah’s Witnesses spokesperson said its members worldwide grieve for the victims of this traumatic event.

Germany’s Chancellor Scholz, who used to be a mayor of Hamburg, said they are speechless by the violence and are mourning.

Trump may face criminal charges in NYC

News reports said the Manhattan DA’s office has invited Donald Trump to testify before a grand jury that has been investigating his “hush money” payment to Stormy Davis, an adult film actress, during the 2016 presidential campaign. Experts said this means Trump may face an indictment based on how cases are typically handled in New York.

Trump is under suspicion of giving his former attorney Michael Cohen money for him to make a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels so she would not talk about her alleged affair with Trump. The crimes here would be falsifying business records and violating election laws.

Trump’s spokesperson said the threat to indict is “simply insane.” Trump said he did nothing wrong and that he never had an affair with Stormy Daniels.

We will know more next week about what the Manhattan DA’s office is going to do.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

Mexican cartel apologizes for killing 2 Americans

A Mexican cartel wrote a letter apologizing for shooting and kidnapping four Americans who were visiting across the border last Friday. Two of the Americans were killed. A Mexican bystander was hit by gunfire and died.

The cartel, called the “Scorpions,” which is a part of the Gulf cartel, said they turned over those who were involved in the shootout, saying they acted on their own decisions and against the cartel’s rules. There is a photograph of five men who were tied behind their backs and lying face-down on the pavement. They are the ones “responsible.”

Some family members of the four Americans said the apology made them speechless and that it doesn’t change anything.

Several Republican members of Congress said cartels should be designated as terrorist organizations and want to see the U.S. military intervene in Mexico. The Mexican president criticized this idea and said it would infringe on Mexican sovereignty.

Four people survive medical helicopter crash

A medical helicopter in North Carolina that had three crew members and one patient crashed on Thursday evening, but all four survived. The helicopter was severely damaged. A photograph shows the helicopter lying on a two-lane road in a forested area.

Investigators are working to find the cause of the crash.

Silicon Valley Bank fails

Axios said the Silicon Valley Bank, which is the country’s 16th largest bank and a top financial institution for technology and life sciences companies, suffered a bank failure.

There was a run on the bank yesterday after there were concerns about its stability. The bank lost over $9 billion in value on Thursday.

Federal banking regulators (FDIC) have taken over control of the bank and said all insured depositors will have access to their money by Monday morning. The FDIC only insures deposits up to $250,000 but said it would sell the bank’s assets and provide more payments to customers who had losses that exceeded FDIC coverage.

Axios said this is the largest bank failure since 2008. It could have a big impact on start-up companies that depend on the bank. Investing advice company “The Motley Fool,” said there’s no reason for panic about the stability of other banks because SVB had a unique business model that is now its downfall.

That is all the top stories for this week. Have a nice weekend and stay with the light.
