Biden approves Alaska oil and gas drilling project

President Biden approved a controversial oil and gas drilling project in Alaska that is called the Willow Project.

BBC said ConocoPhillips plans to drill into Alaska’s remote North Slope and could produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day. Members of Congress said it would create local investment and reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil.

There are many people who say this is the wrong move and would be a disaster for wildlife, lands, communities and our climate.

Biden: “Our banking system is safe”

President Biden gave an address today to try and reassure Americans on the stability of banks after the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank last week. There was another bank in New York, the Signature Bank, that collapsed over the weekend after a bank run.

Both banks are now under the control of the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation). Federal officials said everyone who had deposits in the banks would get their money back from FDIC’s insurance fund.

Biden said his administration would do whatever is needed to prevent any additional bank runs.

Reuters said there are multiple banks in the U.S. and around the world that are seeing their shares drop sharply as investors become nervous.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

8 dead in California smuggling boats

At least eight people on two smuggling boats off the San Diego coast were killed when the boats capsized. There were 15 people on one boat and eight on another boat. AP News said survivors may have escaped on land, including a woman who called 911 to report the incident.

First responders said the boats were found overturned in shallow waters, but that it was a dangerous area because there are rip currents and variations in the water depth. The area, called Black’s Beach, is popular with surfers.

An official said some of the victims were Mexican.

3-year-old fatally shoots 4-year-old sister

In tragic news from Houston, a 3-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her 4-year-old at their home on Sunday. The girls’ parents and three other adults were at the home, but the child somehow gained access to a firearm in a bedroom. Police said family members heard a single gunshot, ran to the bedroom, and found the 4-year-old motionless on the floor. They called 911 but the child died at the scene. Police said it is likely that the adults in the home will face charges related to the unintentional shooting. Police advised parents to secure their weapons and said it is not enough to simply tell them to not touch the weapons.

Zebra attacks man in Ohio

In Ohio, a man who owned several zebras in a rural setting was attacked by one of them, being bit in the arm. Police showed up at the scene and found the man bleeding from his right arm. A zebra was acting aggressively and charged at a police cruiser. One of the cops shot and killed the zebra. The man was taken to a hospital and it was feared that he would have lost his arm from the bite, but his family said he will not lose his arm. There are other zebras on the property and they will probably be able to stay. An Ohio official said zebras are not on the list of dangerous, wild animals that are banned for ownership.
