Inflation up 7% in past year
Prices for everyday things in the U.S. are up 7% over the past 12 months, which is the fastest pace we’ve seen since 1982. CNBC said the inflation is happening “amid a shortage of goods and workers and on the heels of unprecedented cash flowing through the U.S. economy from Congress and the Federal Reserve.”
U.S. judge allows civil case against Prince Andrew to proceed
A New York judge denied British Prince Andrew’s request to dismiss a civil lawsuit from a woman, Virginia Roberts (Giuffre), who said she was sexually abused by the prince through Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking network. Giuffre said the abuse happened in the US Virgin Islands, at Epstein’s home in Manhattan, and at Maxwell’s home in London (there is a picture of Andrew, Giuffre, and Maxwell together in 2001). The prince has denied all the allegations.
Maxwell was convicted on December 29 of sex trafficking of minors from the time she was partners with Epstein.
CNN explained that Andrew has until July 14 to possibly answer questions about the case under oath, and if the case is not settled, the prince may face a trial date between September and December 2022. Andrew is the third child of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ocean temperatures in 2021 hottest in recorded history
A scientific study found that world ocean temperatures in 2021 were the hottest in recorded history. The study said the oceans have been getting hotter since 1958 but has increased at a much faster pace since 1985. Warmer oceans could mean faster intensification of tropical storms and hurricanes, more severe storms in the central U.S., cause sea levels to rise, and major, negative ecosystem changes.
WSJ opinion piece on Hillary in 2024
The Wall Street Journal published an opinion article that said Hillary Clinton may be in a great position to make a run for the presidency again in 2024 because of Joe Biden’s low approval rating (40%) and advanced age — he is 79 and will be 82 when he is up for re-election. Clinton is 5 years younger than Biden. The WSJ piece said Vice President Kamala Harris is struggling with her popularity. The WSJ said if Democrats lose control of Congress after the 2022 elections, Clinton could emerge as a “change candidate.”
Key West vandals arrested
In Key West, Florida, two men were caught on video setting a Christmas tree on fire and leaving it to burn by a famous buoy that marked the southernmost point in the continental U.S. The buoy was damaged with burn marks. Police released the video and asked for help to identify the two men. A bartender recognized one of the men as someone who ordered a drink without leaving a tip three times on New Year’s Eve. The bartender said he worked with the bar’s manager to watch surveillance video inside of the bar and was able to match their faces with the credit cards they used. Police said they tracked their movements from the bar to the buoy and issued arrest warrants. The buoy has been repaired and repainted.
