CEO shooting suspect yells outside courthouse
Suspected CEO killer Luigi Mangione yelled before he entered a courtroom in Pennsylvania for his extradition hearing to say, "This is completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!" Officers pushed him towards a courtroom door while he was yelling.
In the courtroom, Mangione contested the extradition request for him to be transported to New York to face a murder charge. Because of this, New York authorities have to make a warrant and the process could be delayed for up to 30 days. Mangione's attorney said he would plead not guilty to his charges and challenge his detention by filing a petition for a writ of habeas corpus. The attorney also said he’s not seen evidence that shows Mangione was the shooter.
The New York Times reported that police found a notebook in Mangione's backpack where he allegedly wrote that his plan was to "wack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention" and that his plan is "targeted, precise and doesn't risk innocents."
There was a $60,000 combined reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mangione. That money may go to a McDonald's employee who called the police after some customers thought that a guy sitting there looked like the suspect. But according to NewsNation, it may take a while because the suspect has to be convicted, which happens after a trial. There is also a process where law enforcement has to nominate a person for an award. So it'll take a while.
Brian Thompson, the UnitedHealthcare CEO who was killed last week, was buried at a private funeral service in Minnesota on Monday. He was 50 and leaves behind a wife and two sons.

Bankruptcy judge rejects The Onion's bid to buy Infowars
NBC News reported that a bankruptcy judge rejected a bid by The Onion to buy Infowars because the judge believed the auction process was unfair. Infowars and its owner Alex Jones was previously ordered to sell the business to pay defamation damages on behalf of the families of the Sandy Hook mass shooting after Jones spread false information that the shooting was a hoax. This bankruptcy judge said The Onion's parent company did not submit the best bid and was wrongly named the winner of an auction last month. The judge said he didn't think there was enough money in the bid and that the auction was not transparent. NBC News said there may be another auction and The Onion can make another bid. For now, Jones and Infowars can continue to operate their business.

Boy and girl dies after falling through ice on lake
A 12-year-old boy and a 11-year-old girl tragically died after they fell through ice on a lake in Albany, New York on Saturday. The boy died at the scene and the girl was rescued and hospitalized, but she died after a few days in critical condition at a hospital.
The children fell through the ice on Saturday afternoon. Police said someone called 911 to report it and it took first responders seven minutes to arrive. They first saw the girl and pulled her out but the boy was nowhere to be seen. An underwater recovery team found the body of the boy around three hours later. The girl died on Tuesday from her injuries from the lake.
Police believe the boy tried to walk across the ice towards a lake house when the ice broke and that the girl followed the same path.
The North Albany Middle School said both children were students of theirs and that they are offering emotional support as their community grieves.
Officials warned that all ice surfaces in New York are unstable due to fluctuating temperatures. They also advised people to not go on the ice if they see someone falling because they could also fall. They suggested immediately calling 911 for help and to try and do something like throwing a rope.

Joe Burrow's home broken into during Monday Night Football game
Someone broke into the home of NFL quarterback Joe Burrow of the Bengals while he was playing against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. His home is around 13 miles away from Cincinnati.
A person who said they worked for Burrow went to the home on Monday night and saw that a window was broken and the home was in disarray. That person called their mother and they called 911. Police said they are investigating and asking neighbors to help with providing surveillance footage.
The New York Post said the person who called 911 is Olivia Ponton, who is known for being a swimsuit model for SI and has over 8 million followers on TikTok. Police said she works for Burrow.
This is yet another incident of a professional athlete's home being broken into when they are busy working -- several homes belonging to NFL and NBA players were broken into in September and October.
The FBI said some thefts are connected to theft groups from South America who are well-organized and have advanced techniques and technologies.

Monarch butterflies to be added to threatened species list
U.S. wildlife officials said they want to protect the monarch butterfly by listing them as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. The butterflies are grouped in two long-distance migratory populations, eastern and western. The eastern group is the largest and spends winters in Mexico. The western group spends winters on California's coast. Populations have declined by more than 95% since the 1980s and they could become extinct by 2080. Their threats include loss or degradation of habitats, exposure to insecticides, and the effects of climate change. The butterflies may be added to the threatened species list by the end of next year after a public comment period.
