THR: Apple buys DPN documentary from Nyle DiMarco
The Hollywood Reporter said Apple Films bought the documentary “Deaf President Now!” from Nyle DiMarco and his collaborator, an Oscar-winning documentarian named Davis Guggenheim.
The documentary has exclusive interviews with Dr. I. King Jordan, Gallaudet University’s first Deaf president, and the “Gallaudet Four” of Jerry Covell, Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, Tim Rarus, and Greg Hlibok, who were student leaders during the DPN protests in 1988.
The report said the documentary “incorporates an experimental narrative approach called “Deaf Point Of View,” which has unique visual photography and intricate sound design to provide audiences with the Deaf experience.
There were over 40 Deaf or Hard of Hearing subjects, cast, and crew involved with the project, including Deaf filmmaker Wayne Betts Jr. and consultants Jonaz McMillan and Lindsey Dryden.
The report did not mention a release date, but we will share when we know it’s available from Apple.
Apple previously released the film, “CODA,” which had a Deaf cast and led to Oscar wins for “Best Picture,” “Best Supporting Actor” for Troy Kotsur, and Best Adapted Screenplay for writer-director Sian Heder. Apple is definitely a big name here.
