Ukraine attacks Moscow with drones

Reuters reported that Ukraine attacked Moscow, the capital of Russia, with at least 11 drones and attacked other Russian regions with over 30 drones.

Ukrainians have, during the course of the war between Russia and Ukraine, used drones that are designed to crash into a target and explode.

The Russian military said its air defenses shot down most of the drones. The mayor of Moscow said there was no injuries or damage.

The war has escalated since Ukrainian troops crossed the Russian border and seized control of a Russian region called Kursk on August 6. There is fighting in the area.

White woman found guilty in fatal shooting of Black neighbor

In Florida, a 60-year-old white woman named Susan Lorincz was found guilty of manslaughter for shooting and killing her Black neighbor through her front door in 2023. The neighbors had an ongoing dispute about the neighbor’s children playing in front of their homes. The neighbor, Ajike Owens, went to Lorenz’s home after her children said Lorenz threw objects at them. Owens was pounding on the door and Lorenz said she feared for her life before she fired a bullet through the door. A prosecutor said it’s not a crime to bang on someone’s door and that there was no imminent danger when she fired that gun. Another prosecutor said Lorincz's choices have left four young children without their mother. The jury was an all-white panel and it took them less than three hours to find Lorincz guilty. She faces up to 30 years in prison at sentencing.

Meth smuggled in celery and watermelon

In California, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said they found about 4,500 pounds of meth that was smuggled in a batch of disguised watermelons in a semi-truck last week. The driver of the truck was a 29-year-old man who was trying to enter the U.S. from Mexico at a San Diego border crossing. The CBP said there were 1,220 packages wrapped in paper that looked like watermelons. The street value of the drugs is over $5 million. The meth was seized and the truck driver was taken into custody.

That same CBP facility, about a week earlier, busted a 34-year-old truck driver from Mexico who tried to smuggle over 600 pounds of meth in a shipment of celery. A K-9 dog helped officers to detect the drugs.
