US Deaf Women Soccer wins World Championship; Deaf trucker gives ABC News interview
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
U.S. Deaf Women’s National Team wins World Championship
The first is a report from USsoccer.com that the U.S. Deaf Women’s National Team defeated Turkey 3-0 to win its third Women’s World Deaf Championship in Malaysia.
American Emily Spreeman was the tournament’s top goal scorer with 13 goals in six matches and earned two of the tournament’s top honors, the Golden Boot (highest goal scorer) and the Golden Ball (top player).
This continues the team’s dominance in international competition as they won the gold medal in the 2022 Deaflympics in Brazil.

Deaf trucker Victor Robinson interviewed by ABC News
The second Deaf News brief is an interview that ABC News did with the deaf man who won a $36 million disability discrimination judgment against trucking company Werner Enterprises in September. The man’s name is Victor Robinson.
He explained to ABC News that he took Werner’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program and passed it, but when he applied for a job in 2016, he was told that he couldn’t be hired because he couldn’t hear.
Robinson said he reached out to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEOC) and they took up his case and filed a lawsuit against Werner citing violations of the ADA.
I previously reported on this case — a jury awarded Robinson $75,000 in compensatory damages and $36 million in punitive damages, but the punitive damages amount will likely be reduced to $300,000 due to regulations that limit the amount companies have to pay out.
Robinson told ABC News that he believes Congress should raise the limits. He said he got a truck driving job with another company and loves this career.
