It is Tuesday, October 4. Here are today’s top stories.
Ukrainian troops pushing eastwards
The Washington Post reported that Ukrainian troops are making advances on two fronts, one in the eastern part of the country — Donetsk and Luhansk — and the other in the southeastern part of the country — Kherson.
The Russian government recently said they would annex these regions.
The Post’s sources said the Russian invasion force has dysfunction but may send hundreds of thousands of reinforcements after its recent call-up of men to come and serve in its military.
The Biden administration is continuing to send Ukraine hundreds of millions of dollars worth of military equipment, which includes HIMARS systems that can precisely strike targets from over 40 miles to destroy Russian weapon depots.
Report: Herschel Walker paid for abortion in 2009
The Daily Beast reported on Monday night that Herschel Walker, the football legend who is now running as a Republican for a Senate seat in Georgia, paid a woman who got pregnant with him to obtain an abortion in 2009.
The article said it has evidence that includes a $575 receipt from an abortion clinic, a “get well” card from Walker, and a bank deposit receipt that showed a signed $700 personal check from Walker.
It is a big deal because Walker, during his campaign, said he wants to completely ban abortion and compared it to murder.
Walker has denied paying for an abortion and said he would sue The Daily Beast.
In separate but related news, Walker’s adult son, Christian Walker, made a series of social media postings blasting Herschel, calling him a liar, a violent man, and an unfit father who had four kids without raising any of them.
Herschel tweeted, “I LOVE my son no matter what.”
Walker is running against Democrat Raphael Warnock in the November election. The seat is critical for which party controls the Senate after the election.
North Korea fires missile over Japan
This morning, North Korea’s military fired a ballistic missile over Japan towards the Pacific Ocean. Japanese officials issued a warning for residents to take shelter. The missile landed in the Pacific Ocean about 17 minutes after the launch after traveling about 2,800 miles.
It is the first time in five years that North Korea fired a missile over Japan.
The Biden administration said the missile launch was “dangerous and reckless.” Biden had a phone call with the Japanese Prime Minister Kishida today. The White House said the two leaders jointly condemned the missile launch.

Supreme Court begins new term
The Supreme Court began its new term on Monday with a new justice on its bench, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who is the court’s first Black female justice. The Supreme Court also opened its courtroom to the public again for the first time in 2 1/2 years.
The balance of power largely leans conservative with 6 conservative justices to 3 liberal justices.
AP News explained that Monday’s session was “the first time the justices were back hearing cases since issuing a landmark ruling stripping away women’s constitutional protections for abortions.”
Axios said the five biggest cases this term are the limits of the Clean Water Act of 1972, whether state legislatures can set rules for federal elections, a case on the Voting Rights Act that would affect how lawmakers draw congressional district maps, cases on affirmative action in higher education, and on a case from Colorado on whether a web designer can choose not to work with same-sex couples due to religious objections.
Trump sues CNN for $475 million
Former President Trump sued CNN on Monday seeking $475 million in damages with an allegation that CNN defamed him.
The lawsuit focuses on CNN’s use of the term, “The Big Lie,” which refers to Trump’s unproven claims of widespread election fraud.
The lawsuit said the term, “The Big Lie,” has been used over 7,700 times on CNN since January 2021 and that CNN intended to aggravate, scare and trigger people.
AP News said Trump has little success in recent lawsuits against big tech companies, such as Twitter. AP also said, “numerous federal and local election officials in both parties, a long list of courts,… and even Trump’s own attorney general have all said there is no evidence of the election fraud he alleges.”
California family of 4 is kidnapped
Police in Merced County, California said they are searching for a suspect who kidnapped four members of a family. The family includes an 8-month-old baby, her parents Jasleen Kaur and Jasdeep Singh, and the child’s uncle Amandeep Singh.
Police said the family was “taken against their will” while they were at a business. They have released an image of a suspect, who is a middle-aged white man with a shaved head. Police said they do not know what the motive could be but they have evidence that the suspect destroyed evidence in an attempt to cover up their tracks and that the suspect is armed and dangerous.
