Kim Kardashian to pay $1.2 million fine over crypto promo

Kim Kardashian will pay a fine of $1.2 million to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) because she did not disclose that she received a payment to promote a crypto asset on Instagram.

Last year Kardashian posted on Instagram about a crypto asset called Ethereum Max. She posted that “this is not financial advice but sharing what my friends just told me…”

The SEC said Kardashian was actually paid $250,000 to promote Ethereum Max and that it broke a law that requires celebrities and others to disclose when and how much they are paid to promote investment opportunities, “including crypto asset securities.”

Kardashian, in addition to paying the fine, has agreed to not promote crypto assets for three years.

Carter’s granddaughter Paige Alexander, who is the CEO of The Carter Center in Atlanta, said his grandfather is enjoying his retirement but spends a lot of time thinking about various projects with the Carter Center, which was established in 1982 with the goal to advance peace, human rights and public health causes around the world.

Competitive fishermen accused of cheating

There was a viral video over the weekend of an Ohio walleye fishing tournament official angrily confronting two fishermen of cheating by putting lead weights and fish filets into their catch. The idea is to make the fish weigh more since the tournament winner is determined by the combined weight of the top five walleyes they can catch.

The video shows the tournament official takin g out at least 10 thick lead metal weights and filets of fish from inside of the catch of the fishermen who were “supposed” to win the tournament and its prize of almost $29,000.

People shouted that the fishermen should be “in jail” and that they stole money from other competitors.

Tournament officials told CNN that they were in touch with law enforcement and that the two fishermen had recently won fishing tournaments. The accused fishermen’s names are Jacob Runyan and Chase Cominsky.

“Orange Shirt Day” honors Indigenous children who suffered

On Friday, it was the international “Orange Shirt Day,” which is an effort to wear orange shirts to honor the almost 200,000 Indigenous children in North America who, from the mid-1600’s until the 1970s, were separated from their families and forced to live in residential schools. September 30 is called the “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation” in Canada.

In the past, these Canadian schools were run by Christian organizations with the support of the federal government. The U.S. also had government-sponsored Indian Residential Schools. It is estimated that thousands up to tens of thousands of children died in these schools and there were recent discoveries of mass graves near the former sites of the schools.

The NHL’s six Canada-based teams wore orange shirts and raised money for Indigenous organizations.

Hurricane Ian death toll at least 68

Hurricane Ian’s death toll has increased to at least 68 people. AP News said 61 of them were in Florida, while another four occurred in North Carolina. Another three people died in Cuba when the hurricane hit them before the hurricane went up to Florida.

Over 700,000 people are without power in Florida as of Sunday night. Florida officials said there were over 700 people rescued. FEMA said it would be a long road to recovery and that there are a lot of people that are impacted.

At least 125 killed in Indonesian soccer stadium disaster

On Saturday night in Indonesia, at least 125 people were killed in a stampede at a soccer stadium after a match between two rivals. News reports said the home team lost 3-2 and some fans rushed onto the pitch in anger. Riot police fired tear gas, including in the stands, and that caused a panic. Thousands of fans rushed for the exits at the same time, trampling many to their deaths. Others were suffocated. The deaths included at least 17 children and two police officers.

There is a large-scale investigation into what went wrong. Many have blamed riot police for causing chaos by firing tear gas. Others blamed fans for jumping on the soccer field. A local police chief was removed from duty.

The Saturday incident is one of the world’s worst crowd disasters in sports.
