Iran attacks Israel

Iran fired many missiles toward Israel today, not long after some Israeli troops moved into Lebanon to fight against Hezbollah.

AP News said there were a series of window-shaking explosions in Tel Aviv and near Jerusalem and that they could be from missiles landing or missiles being intercepted. Many Israeli civilians received orders to shelter in place. News images and videos showed explosions and fireballs in the sky.

Iran said they did this in support of Hezbollah and Hamas and as a response to the killing of the groups’ leaders by Israeli airstrikes.

Just a few hours before the Iranian missile attacks, Israel’s military started ground operations by moving across the northern border into Lebanon. The Israeli military conducted many airstrikes and artillery fire on southern Lebanon while Hezbollah fighters fired many rockets into Israel.

Israel’s military said Iran would face serious consequences.

The White House has warned that Iran will face severe consequences if they launched a missile against Israel.

There were already many U.S. military assets in the region and they have been involved in helping Israel defend itself from Iranian missiles.

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were in the Situation Room at the White House today to monitor the events.

In separate news, there was a mass shooting in Tel Aviv in which 8 people were killed. Israeli police said two apparent terrorists carried out the shooting and that they were killed by police.

*Correction/Clarification: Six people were murdered and two suspects were killed by police

A major concern is the potential for a wider military conflict between Israel and Iran. Both countries have large economies and militaries and if they were to fight, it would be a different war compared with Israel’s battles with Hamas and Hezbollah.

Pete Rose dies at 83

Pete Rose, the professional baseball legend who played 24 seasons in the MLB and had his reputation tarnished by a gambling scandal, passed away at the age of 83 on Monday.

Rose is the MLB’s all-time leader in hits with 4,256 hits. He won the World Series three times, twice with the Cincinnati Reds and one with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rose’s downfall with pro baseball started after he was found to have gambled on his own team when he was a player and later as a manager. He was banned from baseball for life and was barred from being honored in the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rose said in 2019 that he feels truly sorry for betting for baseball and wishes he could undo his actions.

Rose did get honored by the Cincinnati Reds when he was inducted in the team’s Hall of Fame in 2016. Rose told his fans that he played the game for them. There is a statue of him sliding head-first outside the stadium.

Port workers strike

Almost 50,000 members of a union representing port workers in the East and Gulf Coast started striking today to demand wage increases.

CNN said the strike will stop the flow of a wide variety of goods over the docks of almost all cargo ports from Maine to Texas. This includes bananas, European alcohol, and other goods from Europe. The strike could also stop U.S. exports.

The dispute is between the union, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents major shipping lines, terminal operators, and port authorities.
