Woman charged with hate crime for targeting man with “Palestine” sweatshirt

ABC News said a 64-year-old woman in Illinois was charged with hate crime for yelling expletives at a man wearing a “Palestine” sweatshirt and his wife at a Panera Bread restaurant in a Chicago suburb.

The woman’s name is Alexandra Szustakiewicz. When the confrontation happened, someone filmed it and Alexandra allegedly tried to swat the phone away. The woman allegedly said “This is America. You can’t wear that hoodie.”

She was arrested the next day and accused of committing a hate crime by reason of perceived national origin. She was released from custody and will have to face a judge in December. She was ordered to not contact the victims and not enter the Panera Bread.

A police chief said this type of behavior will never be tolerated in their community.

Trump plans to use military for mass deportations

President-elect Donald Trump said yesterday that he would declare a national emergency and use the military to carry out mass deportations of migrants who are illegally living in the U.S.

There are about 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. and many work in agriculture, oil and gas, construction, and health care and service industries.

Axios explained that the mass deportations could cost $150 billion to $350 billion. There would have to be many detention centers set up, which would cost millions of dollars and require thousands of personnel.

Axios also explained that there will likely be countless legal challenges against Trump’s plans in a bid to slow or halt them.

Protests in New Zealand over Māori rights

CNN reported that tens of thousands of people have marched on the New Zealand parliament to protest a proposed law over concerns that it would dilute the rights of the indigenous Māori people.

Last week, parliament was suspended briefly after several Māori lawmakers protested by ripping a bill and staging a haka, a ceremonial dance.

CNN explained that New Zealand has honored a treaty that protects Māori interests for decades but a right-wing politician recently made a proposal to change the bill because he and his supporters feel that the treaty gives special treatment to the Māori people. This political wanted all New Zealanders to be treated equally and an end to any special honors for the Māori.

That’s a part of the reason why there have been protests. CNN said the legislation is not expected to pass because most parties have committed to voting it down.

Baby saber-toothed cat mummy found in Siberia

A scientific journal said a perfectly-preserved baby saber-toothed cat mummy was found in Siberia in 2020 by a group of paleontologists. The cub was preserved in permafrost and is estimated to be at least 35,000 years old. The cub had fur and flesh on it. A scientist said it is a fantastic feeling to see with your own eyes the life appearance of a long-extinct animal. The saber-toothed cat is a distant relative of modern big cats. Their canines can measure up to 8 inches long. Scientists plan to extract DNA from the animal and study its body to understand more about saber-toothed cats.
