Spirit Airlines files for bankruptcy
Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection today, but flights will continue to operate as normal.
USAToday said the bankruptcy filing is due to the airline’s struggles with a long run of financial losses, failed mergers, and looming debt deadlines.
The bankruptcy filing will allow Spirit to reduce its debt and get additional money, but it will be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.
An airline expert explained that Spirit is unlikely to change or cancel flights during the Thanksgiving holiday but may start making changes in late winter.

Biden authorizes Ukraine to use long-range missiles
ABC News said President Biden authorized Ukraine to use long-range missiles against Russia, which is something that he has prohibited until now. The missiles are called ATACMS and they can fly for almost 200 miles.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy seemed to indicate that he will use the weapons inside Russia, but as of Monday morning, they haven’t struck Russia with ATACMS missiles.
Russian President Putin said the authorization means there is a new level of tensions between the U.S. and Russia.

Pope Francis wants genocide investigation in Gaza
Axios reported that Pope Francis said there needs to be an investigation into whether Israel’s military action in Gaza can be considered genocide. The pope didn’t say this in a public address but made the remarks to book authors who were interviewing him.
Axios said a UN report said almost 70% of the verified fatalities in Gaza were women and children.
Last fall, South Africa filed a formal charge against Israel in the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of committing genocide. No ruling has been issued in the case yet.
Israel has denied any allegations of genocide and has said Hamas fighters operate in areas populated with civilians — and put the blame on the civilian deaths on Hamas.
The pope’s words and concerns do carry weight on how the world views Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Netflix says 60M households watched Tyson-Paul
Netflix said over 60 million households around the world watched the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul on Saturday night. But many people said they had problems with video quality or delays. Netflix said their technology was under great stress due to the viewership.
Although Tyson lost the fight in a unanimous decision, he said he feels like he still won because he almost died in June due to a serious ulcer. He said he is grateful for the experience to still be able to fight one last time.

Mom arrested after son walks alone to store
A 41-year-old mom in Mineral Bluff, Georgia was arrested after her 10-year-old son walked alone to a store less than a mile away. The mother, Brittany Patterson, said she was not home at the time because she was taking her other son to a doctor and she got a call that the 10-year-old boy was walking to town. Police picked up the boy and drove him home and then returned several hours later to arrest the mother on suspicion of reckless conduct. She had to post $500 bail to get out of jail. Patterson said authorities have offered to drop the charge if she signs a form that outlines a safety plan guaranteeing that her children would always be under a watchful eye, but she refuses to sign it and has retained an attorney to contest the charge. She said she’s done nothing wrong. The situation has raised controversy with people debating whether police are overreacting or did the right thing.
