Delphi murder trial ends with guilty verdicts

Yesterday, Richard Allen was found guilty of murdering two teenage girls in Delphi, Indiana in 2017. The girls’ names were Abigail Williams (13) and Liberty German (14). They were enjoying a winter day outside on a wooded trail when they disappeared. Their bodies were found the next day with their throats cut. Prosecutors said Allen is the man that Liberty took a video of on his phone before they disappeared. Prosecutors showed that Allen confessed to the murders during several jailhouse phone calls and to his psychologist. The psychologist said Allen said he wanted to sexually assault the victims but ran away when he saw a van nearby. The jury spent about 19 hours deliberating before reaching a verdict. Allen will be sentenced December 20 and will likely be imprisoned for the rest of his life.

Judge pauses Trump’s hush money case

Axios said the New York judge overseeing President-elect Trump’s criminal hush money case granted a request to pause the case after Trump won the election.

Trump was found guilty in May on 34 counts in New York for falsifying business records in connection with a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about an alleged affair.

Trump was supposed to be sentenced on November 26, but because he won the election, both his defense attorneys and the prosecution asked for a pause in the case, which was granted. There will be an update on Nov. 19.

Analysts with Politico said Trump’s attorneys can easily argue that any kind of sentence would interfere with the president-elect’s duties and impede the orderly transfer of power. So his sentencing may be postponed for four years or canceled altogether.

Trump’s three other criminal cases are also likely to shut down because he’s won the election.

Planes in Haiti hit by gunfire

CNN reported that two passenger jets were struck by gunfire while flying over Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. One of them was a Spirit Airlines plane on Monday that was hit while attempting to land. The plane ended up being diverted to the neighboring Dominican Republic. Spirit said its services to two Haitian cities have been suspended. The second is a JetBlue fight that was hit by a bullet. JetBlue is suspending its flights through December 2.

CNN said Haiti “has been ridden with widespread gang activity and political chaos for nearly a year.” Haiti just sworn in a new prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aime and he promised to restore security.

Honda engines under federal investigation

AP News said the federal agency NHTSA is investigating complaints that engines could fail on about 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles. NHTSA said vehicles with 3.5-liter V6 engines could experience engine failure due to problems with connecting rod bearings. Vehicles include the 2016 through 2020 Honda Pilot / Acura MDX, 2018 through 2020 Honda Odyssey and Acura TLX, and the 2017 through 2019 Honda Ridgeline. AP said Honda did issue recalls in 2023 to fix this same problem but it may not have covered all vehicles.
