Troy Kotsur producing short documentary about his father

“Deadline” reported that there is an upcoming short documentary about Oscar-winning actor Troy Kotsur and his relationship with his father that will premiere at the Tribeca Festival in New York City on June 8.

If you remember, when Kotsur won his Best Supporting Actor Oscar last year for his role in “CODA,” he honored his late father. He said his father was the “best signer” but became paralyzed after a car accident. Kotsur said he learned so much from him and that he is his hero.

“Deadline” said the documentary is titled, “To My Father.” It “explores the relationship between Kotsur and his father Leonard…” The article explained that when Kotsur was a senior in high school, his father was struck by a drunk driver.

There is a two-minute trailer of the documentary and it is available to watch online. Here is a short clip.

[Advertisement from Deaf Law Center]:

Announcing the New York Adult Survivors Act: Many survivors of sexual assault need time to process the hurt they’ve experienced; it might take years or even decades for a survivor to tell someone what happened to them. For years, our laws were out of step with that reality. Because of that, many survivors lost the opportunity to hold the person who hurt them accountable in court. Now, those survivors are getting a fighting chance. The Adult Survivors Act is a New York State law that creates a one-time, one-year look back window for adult sexual assault survivors who are outside the statute of limitations. That means that any adult survivor – no matter when they were assaulted and even if they are outside the statute of limitations – can file a civil case against their abuser or the institution that protected them, through November 24, 2023.

A press release from the film said: “The lessons Troy learned from his dad allowed him to turn the tragedy into triumph.”

Kotsur is one of the producers of the documentary. He told “Deadline” that it was an emotional journey for him to craft the film and that it is an honor for him to tell the world about his father.

The film’s director, Sean Schiavolin, said Kotsur, during his Oscar speech, “invited the world into the remarkable story of him and his dad.” The director said he wanted this film to capture that story.
