It is Thursday, January 12. Here are today’s top stories.
More Biden classified documents
The White House said there was a second set of classified documents from Joe Biden’s time as vice president found at his home in Delaware. The first batch of documents was discovered at his private office in D.C. in November.
The White House said Biden’s lawyers searched his two homes in Delaware after the private office discovery and found most of the classified documents in Biden’s garage and one document was in an adjacent room. A reporter asked Biden why he would keep classified documents near his Corvette. Biden said the garage is locked and it’s not like it’s sitting out on the street.
It is not known what the contents of the documents are. Biden’s lawyers said they would cooperate with the review by the Department of Justice, who is already looking into the private office documents.
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced he appointed Robert K. Hur as special counsel to investigate how the classified documents ended up at Biden’s private office and home.
This is now a “scandal” for Joe Biden, especially because there was a lot of attention on Donald Trump and his classified documents controversy. A main difference is that Trump resisted multiple attempts by the government to retrieve the documents, while Biden reported the discovery and is cooperating with authorities. Trump had hundreds of documents while Biden’s total seems to be about twenty. But we don’t know what the documents were about in either case.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he wants Congress to investigate why the Biden administration did not make it public that they discovered classified documents on November 2, which was just prior to the midterm elections. McCarthy said, “they kept it a secret from the American public.”
5-year-old California boy missing after flooding
A 5-year-old boy in San Miguel, California is missing after he was swept away by floodwaters. The boy’s name is Kyle Doan.
His mother said on Monday, she was driving her family in an SUV across a road that had water crossing over it. The mother thought it was okay to go across because they drove over it the day earlier without any problems. But the SUV was carried away by the water and pinned against a tree. The mother rushed to remove Kyle from her car seat but he was pulled away by the rushing water. The mother was also swept away but was rescued by another person. The mother said Kyle’s last words to her was “Don’t worry, be calm.”
Over a hundred people have been searching for Kyle for the past several days but have not been able to find him. They have only found one of his Nike shoes. The search is still ongoing.
Five cops fired over sex scandal
Five police officers in La Vergne, Tennessee — a suburb of Nashville — were fired after there were allegations that at least five male officers had sex with a female officer both on and off the job.
The police department has 60 staff. An investigation found that some officers shared photos of their private areas, had sex in the police station, and had wild parties.
The involved officers are under suspicion of trying to impede the investigation by lying about their actions. None have been charged with crimes so far.
La Vergne’s mayor said this situation is unacceptable and that a top priority moving forward is rebuilding the public’s trust.

Cholera outbreak kills 750 in Malawi
Officials in Malawi said there is a cholera outbreak that has killed at least 750 people. It is the worst cholera outbreak in the country in 20 years.
Cholera is a deadly disease that is caused by ingestion of food or water that is contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholera. It causes people to have severe diarrhea and become dehydrated. It can kill a person in a day if they do not get treatment.
Officials in Malawi have ordered many businesses that do not have safe water, toilets and hygienic refuse disposal facilities to be shut down.
The World Health Organization said there are also large outbreaks in Haiti and Syria.
There is a cholera vaccine but there are problems with supply. The WHO said warmer temperatures and increased rains make it easier for the disease to multiply and spread.
Inflation finally cools down
The U.S. is finally cooling down inflation. CNBC said the consumer price index — which measures the cost of a range of goods and services — fell 0.1% in December for the biggest drop since April 2020. The biggest reason is the drop in gasoline prices.
The consumer price index is still 6.5% higher compared with a year ago, so there is still a persistent burden on Americans’ wallets.
