Thursday, December 3 top news briefs

It is Thursday, December 3. Here are today’s top news briefs.

On Wednesday, over 3,100 people died from the coronavirus, which is a new record. That figure is from a Johns Hopkins tally. AP News reported that there are over 100,000 people currently hospitalized with the virus, and that there were 200,000 new cases of Covid-19 yesterday.

Former presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama said they would allow themselves to be filmed getting a coronavirus vaccine to show Americans that it is safe.

In Haines, Alaska, there was a major landslide caused by heavy rains that caused six people to become missing. First responders found four of them this morning. News pictures from the Anchorage Daily News showed a badly damaged road and flooded vehicles. The landslide is 600 feet long and covered the area with about nine feet of mud and trees. Hopefully first responders can find the other two today.

In Tampa, Florida, a volunteer at Carole Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue had her arm bitten by a tiger when the volunteer reached through a cage during feeding time. WFLA-TV reported that the tiger dropped its grip when another worker heard the attack and came running. The volunteer had her arm tied up with a belt to act as a tourniquet and was rushed to the hospital via an ambulance. Big Cat Rescue said the volunteer’s name is Candy and that she did not want the tiger, named Kimba, to be harmed because she made a mistake in reaching through the cage. The tiger will be quarantined for 30 days so it can be observed. Baskin became famous from Netflix’s show “Tiger King.”

A couple from Kauai, Hawaii was arrested over the weekend because they got on a plane while they knew they had a positive test for Covid-19. HNN reported that the couple had a pre-travel coronavirus test at San Francisco International Airport and when it came back positive, they were instructed not to board their plane, but somehow they got on an United flight and when they touched down in Kauai, they were arrested and charged with second-degree reckless endangering.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court said they won’t accept an election-related lawsuit from the Trump team because the lawsuit has to go through lower courts first. The decision was 4-3. USAToday explained that this decision is bad news for the Trump team because they are running out of time to challenge the Wisconsin election because the Electoral College is scheduled to met on December 14. Congress will count its votes on January 6.

Joe Biden is projected to receive 306 electoral college votes to Trump’s 232.

The Trump team is hoping that the Supreme Court will hear an appeal on a Pennsylvania lawsuit that a federal judge threw out due to lack of merit, but there’s no guarantee that the Supreme Court will hear the case.

President Trump posted a 46-minute speech recorded from the White House last night. He said the election was stolen from him and that he hopes the Supreme Court will do the right thing.

President-elect Joe Biden, in an interview with CNN, said that after he is inaugurated, he will ask all Americans to wear a mask during his first 100 days. He also said he would require all facilities under federal jurisdiction such as airports or transportation hubs to implement mask requirements. He also said he would appoint Dr. Anthony Fauci as his chief medical adviser.

In San Francisco, city officials voted 10-1 to ban tobacco smoking inside apartments because of concerns with secondhand smoke. But they voted to allow marijuana smoking. AP News said cannabis activists argued that state law bans smoking marijuana in public places, so their apartments are the only legal place to smoke. That’s why they got the exemption. San Francisco is the largest city in the U.S. to have this ban. There were tobacco smokers who said the ban infringed on their rights inside of their homes. The ordinance says if there is a violation, the smoker must be allowed the opportunity to get education and to get help with quitting. But repeat offenders can be fined $1,000 a day.

That’s all the top news briefs for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
