Mavrick Fisher retrial decision; Deaf actress Alaqua Cox to get role in Disney Plus

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

The first — we will be live-streaming Mavrick Fisher’s hearing tomorrow morning in which the Lake County District Attorney Susan Krones will announce her decision on whether she wants a retrial on two charges in relation to the death of Grant Whitaker: voluntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon.

The hearing is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. PT, which is 11:15 am ET. We’ll go live about that time on “The Daily Moth” Facebook and YouTube, and on DPAN.TV as well.

Mavrick was acquitted of first-degree murder on November 20 after a three-week trial, but the jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter and unlawful taking of a car.

DA Krones told the Lake County News that if she decides to go for a retrial, the trial would start in January and would likely take place in the fairgrounds again.

Mavrick will be sentenced on December 21 and the maximum sentence for involuntary manslaughter is four years in jail. However, DA Krones told Lake County News that Mavrick is eligible for “half-time credits” — which means that his sentencing could be reduced to half. Mavrick has already served about one year and three months in jail, so he could be released in 2021.

In my interview with deaf attorney Michael Schwartz, he said the DA must consider the costs of the trial, the wishes of Grant’s family, and whether the punishment that Mavrick faces is sufficient before she decides to go for a retrial or not.

The second Deaf News brief — a young deaf actress named Alaqua Cox will be playing the role of Echo on Disney Plus’ “Hawkeye.” It is an upcoming TV series and set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nyle DiMarco announced this on Twitter. This news is confirmed in a report from Variety, who explained that Cox’s character is a “deaf Native American who is capable of perfectly copying another person’s movements, making her a formidable fighter.” There is not much information about Cox as she is a new actress, but an online search revealed Cox attended the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, was a senior in 2015, and was recognized for her achievements in volleyball and basketball. The “Hawkeye” series will be released in late 2021 or early 2022, so we’ll be seeing more of Cox.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
