The 2019 Winter Deaflympics opening ceremony is this Thursday on December 12th. Many of the athletes and coaches are flying in at the city of Milan. Then they will drive all the way here to Chiavenna. They’ll be making trips to different venues to undergo preparations.

SARAH GORDEN:

See that promotional banner saying, “Welcome to Chiavenna”! There are actually many venues that have more of those posted all over. They really make you feel welcome!

CALLIE FRYE:

I’m here at one of the Deaflympics sites, in Sondrio, and I’m interested in sampling their food and drinks.

CALLIE FRYE:

This is a Sforzato which is a dry red wine. It has a rich taste. See these strips? These are procini mushrooms that are grown on the mountains and then harvested. The meat is a type of cured beef called Bresaola. It has a light, but delicious taste. It has low fat and high protein. After the beef has been dressed in salt, it is brought up to dry in the mountain air. That’s pizzoccheri noodles. It’s made from buckwheat and are typically cooked with potatoes, savory cabbage and mixed in cheese, butter and garlic.

TOJ MORA:

In Italy, they have coffee shops, but they’re named differently. They are called bars or cafes. I’ve noticed some differences. Most places have counters like this one, and most people would go straight to the counter and leave quickly. Here, in their culture, people would order their drinks, have a quick chat, pay then leave. That’s something different!

TOJ MORA:

In America, we typically get big mugs of coffee. Like at Starbucks, people just have to buy huge orders of coffee. They do it differently here. Take a look!
