Fate of “Dreamers” before Supreme Court

Today the Supreme Court heard arguments on President Trump’s plan to end the DACA program. It protects 600,000 to 800,000 immigrants, called “Dreamers,” from deportation. It was created by former President Obama by an executive order.

DACA allows those who moved to the U.S. when they were undocumented children to receive work permits and a two-year “deferred action from deportation” that is renewable.

The Trump administration announced in 2017 they would shut down the DACA program, but federal lawsuits kept the program “alive.” The DACA program is still active and more than half a million “Dreamers” were able to get their status renewed since 2018, but but no new applications are being accepted.

The key argument before the Supreme Court is if the Trump administration acted “arbitrary and capricious” in ending the program.

The Trump administration said DACA is not even legal in the first place because it was not formed by Congress but by executive order, so they can revoke it.

Those who support DACA said no court has ever found the program to be illegal. They also said the Trump administration has to provide a detailed explanation on why they want the program to end.

NBC News reported that more than 90% of DACA “Dreamers” have jobs and almost half are in schools. A study by the CATO Institute found that “Dreamers” have a lower-rate of incarceration than those born in the United States.

President Trump tweeted that many of the people in DACA are “very tough, hardened criminals” but said he would make a deal with Democrats for “Dreamers” to stay if he wins the Supreme Court case.

The Court’s decision will be issued by June. An analysis by a Fox News journalist said Chief Justice John Roberts is likely to cast the deciding vote on a split court.

Jimmy Carter has surgery after recent falls

America’s 39th president Jimmy Carter had surgery this morning to relieve pressure around his brain, which had bleeding from his recent falls. He was hospitalized on Monday.

The Carter Center announced that there was no complications from the surgery and that Jimmy would stay in the hospital for observation. He is expected to eventually be released.

Jimmy is 95 years old. He fell in his home in Georgia last month and had a minor pelvic fracture. He also had stitches above his left eye, but did not let it stop him from doing volunteer work in which he built homes with Habitat for Humanity.

He has lived longer than any other former president in U.S. history.

News Briefs: College gymnast dies in freak accident; SDSU student dies after frat event

Here are two news stories about college students who recently died.

The first — a 20-year-old gymnast from Connecticut, Melanie Coleman, passed away after she slipped off the uneven bars during practice on Friday in a freak accident.

She sustained spinal injuries and died on Sunday. It is not clear exactly how she slipped and how she got injured.

She was a student at the Southern Connecticut State University and studied nursing.

Her family said she was a loving daughter, friend, and teammate. Her organs were donated.

The second news — a 19-year-old student at San Diego State University, Dylan Hernandez, died after he was found without a pulse and not breathing in his dorm room on Thursday morning. The night prior he allegedly attended a fraternity event. He was taken to a hospital but died over the weekend.

SDSU has suspended a total of 14 fraternities. Six were already under suspension. University police have opened an investigation and said they’ve found information that alleges that a fraternity was involved in possible misconduct.

It is possible that Dylan died from some kind of hazing ritual, and if so, it would be similar to the death of Timothy Piazza, who died at 19 years of age after a fraternity event at Penn State University in 2017.

Violence erupts in Israel after airstrike against Palestinian leader

This morning the Israeli government announced they killed a top leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad by launching an airstrike that hit his home before dawn.

The leader’s name was Baha Abu al-Ata and he lived in the Gaza Strip. The PIJ group said Baha’s wife died in the airstrike. His son was injured and taken to a hospital.

Israel said he was a “ticking time bomb” and was about to attack Israel.

There was a barrage of retaliatory rocket attacks from Gaza that were aimed towards Israel. News reports said there were almost 200 rockets fired at Israel. A video showed a rocket landing on an Israeli highway, narrowly missing vehicles.

The New York Times said schools in Tel Aviv were closed and there were air-raid sirens that went off. Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted many rockets. There are no reported deaths in Israel, but one man was wounded by shrapnel.

The Israeli military conducted new strikes on PIJ sites, killing three Palestinians and wounding about 30.

PIJ is an organization that is independent of Hamas, who is the largest political organization in Gaza.

News reports say it is likely there will be an escalation of violence in the region.
