Impeachment public hearings to start Wednesday
The impeachment inquiry against President Trump will shift from a closed-door process to one that has public hearings starting this Wednesday.
The first two witnesses will be two of the top U.S. government officials that are responsible for the U.S.-Ukraine relationship, William Taylor and George Kent. Both have said Trump used national security assistance to get political favors.
The former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, will testify on Friday.
The hearings will start with opening statements and then move to a 90-minute questioning period with time split evenly between Democrats and Republicans.
NBC News explained that the House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif) and the committee’s top Republican, Devin Nunes (Calif) will either question the witness themselves or instruct a committee lawyer to question the witness.
After the 90 minutes is up, Chairman Schiff will decide if more time is needed for additional questions. If so, then lawmakers will have 5 minutes each to ask questions.
This will be the first public presidential impeachment hearings in more than 20 years. The last time? Bill Clinton in 1998.
The Hill reported that House Democrats hope to wrap up their investigation and vote on articles of impeachment by the end of the year. They have accused Trump of abusing his powers.
Republican leaders want the anonymous whistleblower and Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, to testify, but it is very doubtful that Democrats will approve.
President Trump have branded the inquiry as a “witch hunt” and as the “Impeachment Scam.”

Navy submarine missing since WWII found off Japanese coast
A U.S. Navy submarine that has been missing for 75 years with 80 sailors in it was found sumberged off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. Its name is the U.S.S. Grayback.
The submarine was last seen leaving the Pearl Harbor in January 1944. It was supposed to return in March, but never did.
The New York Times said after World War II, there were a total of 52 submarines that the Navy lost. The Grayback was thought to have gone missing at a certain location near Japan according to a translation of Japanese war records.
Last year an amateur researcher named Yutaka Iwasaki, while reading radio reports from an Imperial Japanese Navy base, saw that there was a report of a Japanese warplane that dropped a 500-pound bomb on a surfaced submarine, which caused it to explode and sink immediately.
That radio report had a specific longitude and latitude that did not match with the Navy report, which is now said to be mistranslated.
The new location was shared with an undersea explorer, Tim Taylor, who has a mission to find the wrecks of every American submarine lost during WWII.
In June, Taylor and his team used an underwater “drone” to ping sonars in Japanese waters. They were able to find the Grayback on the sea floor at a depth of 1,400 feet. Its deck gun was 400 feet away and is believed to have been blown off when it was bombed.
Taylor said they were thrilled to find it, but that it was also a “sobering” moment because it meant they found the bodies of 80 men. They had a ceremony the next day to honor the sailors who died.

World News: Violence in Hong Kong; Bolivian leader Evo Morales resigns
Here are two world news briefs.
The first — today’s protests in Hong Kong turned very violent when a police officer shot a live round at a protester’s chest at close range. He is in critical condition. There is a video of the incident and you can see an officer in a yellow vest firing a single shot at a masked protester while struggling with another masked protester.
A pro-Beijing supporter was doused in a flammable liquid and set on fire as he argued with protesters. This was also caught on video. You can see a middle-aged man in a green shirt talking to several people when someone splashes liquid on him and flicks a lighter. He is in critical condition.
Hong Kong’s leader, Carrie Lam, said the protesters are the enemies of the people and that the government won’t yield to their demands.
The second news — Bolivia’s long-time president Evo Morales resigned after several weeks of protests over the country’s election, which took place on October 20. Morales won a fourth consecutive term, but he was accused of fixing the election. Morales said he would hold new elections, but there were protests, clashes, and political turmoil.
The chief of Bolivia’s armed forces made a public statement that said Morales should step down so there could be peace and stability. BBC News said that tipped the balance and led to Morales resigning. Several countries’ leaders said this was a “coup.”
There will be a new election. Morales was the country’s first indigenous leader and was in power for almost 14 years.

Don Cherry steps down as hockey broadcaster after criticizing immigrants
Don Cherry, a well-known and longtime NHL commentator, will step down from Canadian broadcaster Rogers Sportsnet after he criticized immigrants on “Hockey Night in Canada” on Saturday night.
Cherry said that he saw that many people in Mississauga or downtown Toronto did not wear small artificial poppies to honor Remembrance Day, which is when Canada and other Commonwealth states around the world honor members of their armed forces who have died on duty.
Many Canadians wear red poppies on their chests that they can get from various places with a donation of a few dollars.
Cherry said, “You, that come here, whatever it is — you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life, that you enjoy in Canada.”
After people criticized Cherry, he did not apologize but instead said, “I’ve had my say.”
Rogers Sportsnet issued a statement that said, “Don’s discriminatory comments are offensive and they do not represent our values.” The company’s president apologized.
The Canadian Forces in the United States tweeted out images of minorities who served in the military. See this.
