Sundance Film Festival to premiere Marlee Matlin and DPN documentaries
The upcoming Sundance Film Festival on January 23-February 2 in Park City, Utah will premiere two Deaf-related documentaries.
The first is “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore.” It is directed by Deaf actress and writer Shoshannah Stern and it is co-produced by PBS’ “American Masters.” The documentary will explore Matlin’s rise to fame in 1987 when she became the first Deaf Oscar winner, the complexities of being a trailblazer, and includes never-before-seen home videos and multiple interviews.
The second is “Deaf President Now!,” the documentary that is co-directed by Nyle DiMarco. I did a Deaf News video about this on Tuesday. It will bring a new perspective on the well-known DPN protest at Gallaudet University in 1988 that brought in the university’s first Deaf president. Apple has already bought the documentary but it’ll premiere at the festival.
So it’s two Deaf-related documentaries premiering in the same year at Sundance. You can watch them if you show up in person and pay the tickets, or you can watch them online. Single-film online tickets cost $35 and go on sale on Jan 16.
I’ve provided links to both documentaries for more information in the transcript.
