September 15 top stories

It is September 15. Here are today’s top stories.

UAW strike against GM, Ford, Stellantis

The United Auto Workers (UAW), a union that represents 150,000 employees at dozens of factories in the U.S., started a strike against General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis.

The UAW and the three automakers failed to reach a deal on a new contract at the deadline last night. Key issues are better pay, pensions, and retiree health care.

Workers are now striking at three specific factories, a GM facility in Missouri, a Ford facility in Michigan, and a Stellantis facility in Ohio. About 13,000 workers are striking.

It is the first time that the UAW is striking against all three automakers at once.

Category 1 Hurricane Lee to hit Canada

Category 1 Hurricane Lee is forecast to pass very close to Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine on Friday and then make landfall in the Canadian Atlantic provinces on Saturday.

The hurricane’s wind field is very large, so most of the New England area will see stormy weather. One major concern is storm surge if the storm approaches during high tide.

Libya flooding toll at least 11,000

The Libyan Red Crescent said the death toll from the floods in the eastern part of the country has surpassed 11,000 people. That number may continue to climb because there are over 10,000 people who are missing.

More than 16 inches of rain fell within a 24-hour period. Two dams collapsed, sending waters rushing through the city of Derna. The city has been declared a disaster zone and there is no electricity there.

ABC News said rescue efforts have been hampered by the political situation in Libya because the country is split between two warring governments.

Zelenskyy to visit Washington D.C. next week

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is expected to visit Washington, D.C. next week and meet with President Biden at the White House and attend meetings at the Capitol.

Congress is currently discussing a request from Biden to provide more than $20 billion in fresh aid for Ukraine. There is some opposition from Republicans in the House to giving that much money to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy will also visit New York City for the UN General Assembly next week.

That is all the top stories for this week. Have a good weekend and stay with the light.
