Search ongoing for missing Malaysian deaf mountaineer

The search for the missing deaf Malaysian mountaineer at Mt. Everest is still going on. His name is Muhammad Hawari Bin Hashim and he was reported missing last Friday after scaling Everest on Thursday.

A news report said search crews have found Hawari’s Gore-Tex jacket with GPS equipment on it. Crews are searching crevasses, which are deep, open cracks in the mountain. Crews are trying to trace Hawari’s mobile phone and have asked Nepal police for help.

Another news report said the Malaysian Youth and Sports Ministry has allocated the equivalent of about $320,000 USD for search and rescue efforts. The money will be used to hire more sherpas and helicopters. The searches will last until May 28, this Sunday.

One of the leaders of the search crew said it is more challenging to find Hawari because he is deaf — it means they can’t rely on shouting and waiting to hear back.

A person on Twitter shared a screenshot from a sherpa who said he is a part of the search crew. The image showed several red arrows near the summit of Everest and another peak, Lhotse.

Deaf American mountaineers Scott Lehmann and Shayna Unger, who scaled Mt. Everest on Tuesday, posted on Instagram that they just got back to Everest Base Camp and that they just learned about Hawari’s situation. They said they are shocked and really hope that he will be found soon.

They showed an image of the three together at Everest Base Camp before they went up the mountain in different groups.

On April 26, Hawari posted on his Instagram page a video of him sharing an inspiring message with Scott and Shayna about their hopes to reach the summit and prove that deaf people can do it.
