Tina Turner passes away at 83
Tina Turner, who was known as the “Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll,” passed away at the age of 83 on Wednesday night.
Her representative said she died peacefully after a long illness in her home in Switzerland.
Turner was born in 1939 in Tennessee. She married a man named Ike Turner, who was also a musician. They gave shows across the U.S. and had success but Turner said it was an abusive relationship. She left him and they eventually divorced.
Turner then became a solo artist and rose to fame in the 1980s with one of her most well-known songs, “What’s Love Got to Do with It.”
She won eight Grammy Awards. A concert she did in Brazil in 1988 drew about 180,000 people. She also found success in Hollywood, appearing in a “Mad Max” film and creating the theme song for a Bond film.
There are many people giving tributes to Turner and talking about the impact she had on them and the world.
Ron DeSantis officially enters presidential race
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis officially entered the Republican presidential race yesterday when he filed paperwork and announced his candidacy on a Twitter Spaces event with Elon Musk.
The Twitter announcement was marred by crashes and glitches.
Axios said DeSantis “will use the various moves he’s made in Florida — like fighting Disney, banning critical race theory, restricting discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms, and opposing China — as a proposed ‘blueprint’ for conservative policy across the country.”
DeSantis is considered the biggest rival to Donald Trump.
Oath Keepers founder sentenced 18 years for Capitol riot
The founder of the right-wing militia group Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on his conviction of seditious conspiracy in connection with the Jan 6. Capitol riot.
During his trial, prosecutors said Rhodes coordinated Oath Keepers in several states to come to the Capitol on Jan. 6 and on that day, he was like a general overlooking a battlefield.
Rhodes said he is a “political prisoner” and that his goal will be to expose the criminality of the Biden administration.
The judge in the case said we can have disagreements about who is the better (president) but we cannot have a group of citizens who want to revolt and take up arms, because they did not like the outcome of an election.
There are eight other Oath Keepers members who face sentencing either today or in the next few days.
In separate but related news, the rioter who was seen in a picture sitting in then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and putting his feet on her desk was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison. His name is Richard Barnett and he is from Arkansas.

11-year-old boy who called 911 is shot by police
In Mississippi, a police officer shot an 11-year-old boy in his home while responding to a domestic disturbance call. The boy was hit in the chest and was hospitalized but is recovering. His name is Aderrien Murray and this happened in the city of Indianola.
CNN explained that the boy’s mother, on early Saturday morning, was spooked when an irate father of another of her children showed up at the home. The mother asked Aderrien to call 911. When the officer arrived, he drew his gun at the front door and told those inside to come outside. When Aderrien came around the corner of a hallway, the officer shot him. The mother said Aderrien kept asking “Why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?”
Aderrien had a collapsed lung, fractured ribs and a lacerated liver. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday.
The police officer involved is on paid administrative leave and there is an investigation into the shooting. Aderrien’s mother said the officer should be fired and face criminal charges.
Teen falls to death while filming for social media
Police said a 17-year-old teenager fell to his death after he climbed a bridge in Los Angeles while doing a social media stunt.
The bridge is the 6th Street Viaduct and it has several large concrete arches on the bridge. The bridge is new, opening last July.
Police said the teenager slipped and fell while climbing on one of the arches.
AP News said the bridge was closed several times in the past year because it became a hotspot for street racing, graffiti and illegal takeovers with drivers performing dangerous stunts in their vehicles.
Police said they would increase patrols on the bridge to prevent reckless actions.
Cowboy ropes cow on busy interstate
On Sunday afternoon an escaped cow ran into a busy interstate in the Detroit area and was captured by a cowboy on horseback. It was all captured on a police dashcam video.
A news report said the cow was stuck in a gravel pit and there were others trying to rescue it. Someone contacted police to notify them of the situation in case the cow escaped and ran toward the highway.
The dash cam video showed that the cowboy, Ricky Littlejohn, was able to use a lasso to control the cow and bring it to a stop on the median of I-75. The cowboy had the help of a man driving an ATV and a couple of dogs. It was a wild scene on a highway.
Littlejohn said the cow isn’t his — that he captures escaped cattle for a living. He said he captures around 200 to 250 cows every year.
