Polish Deaf soccer player tragically drowns
I read tragic news reports from Poland that said a Deaf soccer player named Mateusz Hempe, who was a goalkeeper for the Polish National Deaf Football Team and played for a local club, died after drowning in a river after trying to retrieve a stray ball that fell into it.
A news report said Hempe was swept away by the current despite efforts from his teammates to save him. This happened Monday evening. His body was recovered about two hours later by firefighters. He was 32.
The club that Hempe played for, MKS Steico Noteć Czarnków, said “on behalf of the entire white and green community, we express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends…”
