October 5 top stories
It is October 5. Here are today’s top stories.
Biden now building new border wall
The Biden administration said it would endorse new border wall construction in Texas to try and limit unlawful entries into the U.S.
Axios said it is a “major reversal” for President Biden because he previously promised that he wouldn’t build another foot of the border wall that the Trump administration built. One of Biden’s first executive actions halted construction of the wall, saying building it was not a serious policy solution.
The Biden administration said there is currently a very serious situation with an immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads to prevent illegal crossings. The new construction will take place in Starr County, Texas.
Government data shows that illegal crossings has reached a record high in September.
4 teens killed in stolen SUV crash
NBC 4 Washington reported that four teenagers were killed Friday night in an SUV crash after a police pursuit. The vehicle was stolen in an armed carjacking earlier that day.
Police said they initially tried to pull over the SUV, a Kia Sorento because it had expired temporary tags. The driver didn’t stop and led police on a pursuit and the SUV managed to get away, but a few minutes later, crashed into a tree and caught fire in Bowie, Maryland.
Two of the teenagers are Serenity Sellman (15) and Dartrel Byers (17). They were together when they were picked up by two other teenagers. A family member of Serenity said they didn’t know that the SUV was stolen and if they knew, they wouldn’t have entered it and would have been still alive today.
Police have not released the identities of the driver and the second person who was with him.
75,000 healthcare workers strike against Kaiser
About 75,000 healthcare workers with Kaiser Permanente went on strike yesterday in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Virginia, and D.C. The workers include nurses, X-ray technicians, ultrasound sonographers, and others.
Axios said the workers’ unions’ contract with Kaiser expired on September 30. Workers have complained about staffing shortages and unsafe conditions. They want wage increases, better benefits, and safe staffing.
This is the latest strike to happen in the U.S. with others involving Hollywood writers and actors and more recently an auto workers strike.

Trump leaves New York; NY AG James blasts him
Former President Donald Trump left the New York courtroom yesterday where his civil fraud trial is taking place to go back to Florida.
He was never required to appear in court but Trump said he wanted to show up to “expose corruption to the press.” Trump accused New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the fraud case against him, of conspiring with the Department of Justice to harass him and hurt his chances of winning the presidency again.
NY AG James said in remarks to the press that she “would not be bullied.” She said “Mr. Trump is no longer here, the Donald Trump show is over.” She said Trump only showed up to get attention and fundraise. She also said Trump made dangerous and racist comments, but they would not deter her.
New York prosecutors are seeking a $250 million fine against Trump and his business. The trial may last until the end of December.
