Gallaudet and AT&T unveil football helmets with lens
Gallaudet University announced today that it collaborated with AT&T to create the “first 5G-connected football helmet” with a lens inside the helmet. Coaches will be able to pick a play from a tablet and it’ll send the play in augmented reality on the lens. Check out this clip from AT&T.

Nice! In case you aren’t familiar with football, many “hearing” high school teams, college football programs and the NFL use audio technology to allow coaches to communicate with players on the field. So this may bridge the gap in this ability to communicate for deaf players. One of Gallaudet’s players told ABC’s Good Morning America that this technology could also apply to deaf coaches.

AT&T said its 5G technology “provides the reliability and low latency for plays to be sent and received at a speed that keeps up with the pace of the game.”

Gallaudet and AT&T said the applications for a 5G-connected helmet could have a reach beyond college football as it could include any sport that requires helmets or even deaf professionals in the workplace.
Gallaudet said it has long been a pioneer for innovation ever since it invented the modern-day huddle in 1894.
AT&T said it is donating $500,000 to the school’s football program and giving every Gallaudet player a new helmet.
Gallaudet’s football team plans to use the new helmet for the first time during a home football game this Saturday against Hilbert College.
