It is November 3. Here are today’s top stories.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried convicted

A New York jury has convicted Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, on all of his charges of fraud. He faces up to 110 years in prison at his sentencing on March 28.

About $10 billion were stolen from customers and investors who believed they were buying cryptocurrency with FTX. Bankman-Fried moved these funds to spend it on luxury items or outside investment projects without the customers’ knowledge. When the customers wanted their money back, it was already gone.

Federal prosecutor Damian Williams said Bankman-Fried perpetrated one of the biggest financial frauds in American history. He said cryptocurrency might be new but this kind of fraud is old.

Israel-Hamas war updates

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he opposes any kind of pause in fighting in Gaza as long as Hamas continues to hold about 240 hostages seized from southern Israel during the Oct. 7 attack.

U.S. Secretary of State Blinken is in Israel today and is raising concerns about the mounting death toll of Palestinians in Gaza, many of whom were killed by Israeli bombs. Blinken said they need to do more to protect Palestinian civilians.

The leader of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed paramilitary group in Lebanon, said there is a possibility of an escalation of war on the Israel-Lebanon border.

The Israeli military said they are on a very high level of alertness at the Lebanese border.

The U.S. said Hamas is hoarding about 200,000 gallons of fuel to use for the rockets it fires into Israel and to run generators that provide clean air and electricity to its network of underground tunnels. The U.S. said despite this, they hope to find a way to provide fuel to hospitals in Gaza that are struggling to maintain services without electricity and for other basic needs.

News reports said there continues to be Israeli bombardments in Gaza, including areas near hospitals.
