MSDB $250k donation; PGA interpreters
Here are two Deaf News Briefs.
WLBT News in Mississippi reported that the Mississippi Schools for the Deaf and Blind will be getting a $250,000 donation that was left unclaimed for five years.
A report from TateRecord.com explained that the money was a donation from a woman named Zeita Parker, who died in 2015. She had a terminal illness and worked with an attorney to make an estate plan (will). She wanted to set up a fund to benefit MSDB but for some reason, it was not clear in her donation. The money sat in the state treasurer’s office for five years until the treasurer worked with a nonprofit organization to figure out that the money was intended to benefit MSDB students.
MSDB Superintendent Jeremy Stinson said the money will be used to provide birthday parties and Christmas gifts for residential students and decorations for prom or graduation. The goal is to make students feel more at home at the school.

PGA Championship to provide ASL interpreters from RIT/NTID
The PGA Championship will take place this Thursday through Sunday in Pittsford, New York — near Rochester. WXXI News reported that ASL interpreters from RIT/NTID will be at the event at information booths to benefit deaf or hard of hearing fans. There will also be interpreters during the Wanamaker trophy presentation on Sunday for the tournament’s champion.
NTID President Gerry Buckley said in a statement that they are “incredibly proud to be making history.” RIT said there would be more than two dozen interpreters working multiple shifts throughout the week and that they would wear special shirts, co-branded with PGA, to make it easier to spot them.
So if you are planning to attend the golf tournament in person or watch it on TV, keep a lookout for those ASL interpreters.
That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
