California serial killer suspect arrested

Police in Stockton, California announced they have arrested a suspected serial killer who they believe killed five people in the city over the past three months and a sixth person last year in Oakland.

The suspect’s name is Wesley Brownlee (43). Police said they arrested him after following his car at 2 a.m. on Saturday. He had a firearm on him and wore dark clothing and a mask, which is similar to a previously-released photo of the suspect.

Stockton Police Chief McFadden said they do not have a motive for the shootings.

Student loan forgiveness app now online

The Biden administration set up a website to allow those with federal student loans to file an application to cancel up to $20,000 in debt.

The website is run by the Department of Education and is in a “beta test” phase. The DOE said it would monitor the website’s performance and fix any bugs or change things around before officially launching it later this month.

ABC News said the amount of debt relief that could be provided depends on what kind of financial aid a student received and how much money they make.

The White House estimated that about 20 million people could see their debts erased.

The program is controversial and has been challenged in court by lawsuits from conservative groups or states that say the Biden administration does not have the authority to cancel the debt.

Ye is buying Parler

Rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, is buying the Parler social media platform. It is similar to Twitter but is popular with conservatives and right-wingers.

This month Ye’s accounts on Instagram and Twitter were restricted due to antisemitic comments he made, such as a claim that Jews were controlling people. He also posted that he would go “death con 3” on Jewish people, which is akin to saying he would be ready for war.

Prior to that, Ye raised controversy by wearing a “White Lives Matter” t-shirt at a fashion show.

After the antisemitic comments, banking giant JPMorgan Chase cut its ties with Ye and Adidas said it would reevaluate its relationship with Ye.

Parler was founded in 2018 with the goal of providing people with conservative views an alternative to Twitter. Now Ye will be the owner of Parler.

Bear attacks 10-year-old boy in Connecticut

On Sunday in Morris, Connecticut, a 250-pound black bear attacked a 10-year-old boy who was playing in his grandfather’s backyard.

The boy’s grandfather said he heard the boy yell “bear” and when he looked up, he saw a bear biting the boy’s leg and trying to drag him across the lawn. The grandfather and a neighbor were able to scare away the bear and rescue the boy. The bear returned to the home after a while and was fatally shot by police.

The boy had a puncture wound on his thigh, bite marks on one of his feet, and claw marks on his back. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.

NYC building emergency tents for migrants

CNN reported that New York City officials have constructed large emergency tents to provide shelter for hundreds of migrants that are arriving from the southern border.

Texas Gov. Abbott has been sending buses full of migrants to the city. He said he wouldn’t stop because it’s providing relief to border communities and allowing liberal leaders to experience what Texan cities are experiencing.

NYC Mayor Adams declared a state of emergency last week in response to the migrant influx. He promised that the city would help the migrants but needs more help from state and federal officials.

Updates on Russian invasion of Ukraine

Here are three updates on Russia’s war on Ukraine.

“The Guardian” reported that Russian soldiers shot and killed a Ukrainian conductor at his home after he refused to participate in a concert in the now-occupied city of Kherson. The musician’s name was Yuri Kerpatenko.

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has continued to be hit by explosions. Ukrainian officials said Russian troops are using “kamikaze” drones that they obtained from Iran. At least eight people were killed today.

In Russia, at a military training center, two Russian volunteer soldiers opened fire on other Russian troops, killing 11 and wounding 15. Other soldiers returned fire and killed the two gunmen. It is yet another attack on a Russian military facility since Putin announced an unpopular mobilization.
